New Version of WCP OpenGL Patch Released Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Update ID

PopsiclePete has posted an updated version of his fabulous OpenGL upgrade to Wing Commander Prophecy! The program allows players to set virtually any resolution, which alone is a big bonus on top of the game's native 640x480 graphics. It also improves the background art, adds lighting effects, fixes some minor graphical glitches and adds back in features that previously required a specific 3dfx glide graphic card. Installation is also easy. On top of a regular Prophecy setup, simply grab and execute this patch (17.2 meg exe). Today's update fixes crash that prevented some players from finishing the game with all the upgrades. As an extra bonus, the patch is also compatible with HCl's Enhancement Pack which fixes video playback, adds multiplayer and enables DVD video playback!
Up until now, some people seemed to have a problem with the OpenGL pack for WCP. A strange API bug on some Windows version (well, Vista x86 at least) made the OpenGL setup erroneously patch out the Huge-Plasma-Gun version of the Midway, so the game would crash the first time you'd launch from it. Clever gamers found a workaround (restoring DATA.TRE from the CD) but this disabled the enhanced effects edited textures.

This new version fixes the patch process, and repairs the previously damaged DATA.TRE if needed. Thanks to Whistler for helping me find the source of the problem through is affected PC (I couldn't reproduce on my own machine).

Here are some nifty side by side comparisons of the game before and after the OpenGL upgrade.
