Kotaku is running a feature to celebrate the fifth anniversary of World of Warcraft. While the point of the article is about how many MMOs have collapsed during its time (such as Origin founder Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa), they give props to the first popular, modern and still-running MMO: Ultima Online. UO was launched way way back on September 25, 1997 and still maintains between 50 and 75,000 subscribers, most of which are in Japan.
