Ultima X Cancelation Probed Further By Slashdot
It looks like Slashdot felt the UXO cancelation deserved some further discussion. It is sort of an interesting situation, what with this being the second canceled attempt at a full Ultima Online sequel. A lot of people are suggesting a variety of different reasons for the game getting canned. The Slashdot post suggests EA's fear of splitting its Ultima Online 1 user base as a primary motivator. We think the biggest problem was the game being unable to handle the shift from Austin to Los Angeles. Not enough of the team moved with it, MMO games are expensive to make with diminishing profit potential, and EA's original (and continued) success with UO1 has made it overconfident in the massively multiplayer arena.
