WC4 Movie Index: Hellespont and Tyr
I'm putting you back in the cockpit
Confederation shuttle, Nephele system.
Maniac: Who was that guy? How did he know your name?
Maverick: Ah, I wish I knew. I’d love to get my hands on him, whoever he is.
Maniac: You see the move he pulled back there? You call me a hot-dog, right?
Maverick: That wasn’t hot-dogging, Maniac. That was the move of a true master.Confederation shuttle, en-route to Confederation Headquarters.
Maverick: Is that the Victory?
Maniac: Can you believe it? It’s an orbital museum now. A relic of the War – like some farmers I know. Probably got a plaque right over your bunk.Admiral Tolwyn’s Office, Confederation Headquarters.
Maverick: <cough>
Tolwyn: Magnificent, aren’t they? I bet you wish you’d had one of those during the war. Would’ve put the fear of God into the Kilrathi.
Maverick: <chuckles> Well, carriers don’t fly themselves, Admiral.
Tolwyn: Quite. Quite right, Colonel. It is the men, isn’t it? Well, it looks like the, uh, pastoral life agrees with you. I’m envious. If I was a little more confident in the Confederation’s security, I’d walk away in an instant. Well, reports are that you ran into some trouble on your way here.
Maverick: Yes, sir.
Tolwyn: Ah, law and order – concepts that seem to be crumbling throughout the Confederation.
Maverick: These are transitional times, Admiral.
Tolwyn: Yes, but in the Kilrathi, we had a common enemy. It was Humanity’s finest hour. Now we cast about, uncertain. Well, you’ve seen it for yourself, the wanton destruction. That’s why Confed needs your services – your experience – again.
Maverick: You know where my loyalties have always been, sir.
Tolwyn: Something we count on, Colonel. For the past months now, there’s been an undeclared war waged against us – acts of terrorism, piracy, sabotage. Is it symptomatic of these transitional times or is there something else at work here?
Maverick: Do you see a strategy or design behind it?
Tolwyn: Every time I connect the dots, I’m always guided back to our long-time allies in the Border Worlds.
Maverick: And you think they’ve undertaken some kind of guerilla war?
Tolwyn: Well, their relationship with Confed has always been uneasy. The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.
Maverick: Which is where I come in?
Tolwyn: Hm. Well, we have a long history together – one that, uh, I daresay has been a bit rocky in the past.
Maverick: We have had our differences, sir.
Tolwyn: But there’s no denying our achievements. Which is why I have personally reinstated you to active duty. Not only will you be my eyes and ears, but your very presence in the Border Worlds will send a potent message to all the galaxy.
Maverick: I am no politician, sir.
Tolwyn: Actions speak louder than words, Colonel. I’m not sending you there merely as a symbol. I’m putting you back in the cockpit, where you’ll be reunited with an old friend… the thrill of battle.Flight Deck, TCS Lexington.
Maniac: Maniac: My callsign. It’s how I live. It’s how I fly, because that’s the name… c’mon round here, because that’s the name of the tune right there…
Maverick: Hey, Maniac!
Maniac: Blair!
Pilots: (overlapping) Oh, my…! Colonel Blair, nice meeting you, sir. Nice to meet you, sir. Let me take your bag. Colonel Blair, sir, it’s an honour, sir.
Maverick: Thank you.
Maniac: All hail the mighty “Heart of the Tiger”. Y’know, you’re not the only war hero in Confed. I’ve taken out more cats than most ships’ entire attachments. Do I get the red carpet treatment? No. No. I carry my own duffel bag. I don’t go schmoozing with the Admiral. Admiral Tolwyn, Tolwyn, Tol… Has he said anything about me?
Maverick: You haven’t heard? He couldn’t stop talking about you, Maniac.
Maniac: What?
Maverick: Well, it’s classified. I mean, I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you.
Pilot: <laughs>
Maniac: I got clearance here. I got clearance. I’ll tell you about it later. Wait a minute!

Eisen welcomes Blair
Flight Control, TCS Lexington.
Eisen: <chuckles> Colonel! You remember our bet?
Maverick: I was hoping you’d forget, Captain.
Eisen: I told you you weren’t through with flying, you kept telling me you were done.
Maverick: <laughs> Well, never say never, I suppose. I gotta tell you, this ship really puts the Victory to shame. Looks like Confed’s been taking good care of you.
Eisen: Yes, they’ve been taking care of me. It’s a different task now, but that means I still need good pilots.
Naismith: Captain Eisen, please report to the bridge.
Eisen: We’re getting ready to jump to the Hellespont system, take care of a little trouble. You take a good look around, you’ll find it a lot different from your last tour of duty.

Look what the solar winds blew in
Officers’ Lounge, TCS Lexington.
Vagabond: Look what the solar winds blew in. Welcome aboard, Colonel. One card draw for the next drink.
Maverick: <snorts>
Vagabond: <laughs> Better luck next time.
Maverick: So, you still living up to that callsign of yours?
Vagabond: A man can do okay, ’long as he doesn’t stay in one place too long. ’course, I had to get greedy: stayed in the active reserve. All those monthly credits seemed like free money.
Maverick: Yeah.
Vagabond: Who would’ve thought they’d actually reinstate me? I got played for a sucker. I oughtta know better, right?
Maverick: Well, I’ve never seen you lose a hand when it counted, Vagabond. Speaking of which, I think I owe you a drink.

Mission Briefing (B1)
Briefing Room, TCS Lexington.
Eisen: (…matter where I am or what I’m doing, I want you to interrupt me and let me know about that supply ship…) Ah! Colonel, shall we cut to the chase?
Maverick: Wouldn’t have it any other way, sir.
Eisen: Good. Now, some of these newbies rattle on about “what if this happens”, “what if that happens”. This is the brain case, I tell them: make good use of it. Now, we’re here in the Hellespont because pirates have been disrupting the trade routes in and out of the system. As yet, we don’t know what their motivations are. Some of their attacks appear to be the usual attempts to confiscate supplies and weapons, yet others are simply senseless violent acts of terror. Now, I want you and a wingman to escort this supply transport to the jump point, ensuring its safe passage out of the system, then fly to this nav point where a communications array is under construction. Now, upon your arrival, you’ll relieve the patrols currently providing security in the area. Understood?
Maverick: Yes, sir. Oh, and Captain, it’s great to be flying for you again.
Eisen: The feeling’s mutual.

Catscratch
Flight Control, TCS Lexington.
Maverick: Can I direct you somewhere, Lieutenant?
Catscratch: Just shipped in, sir. 2nd Lieutenant Troy Carter. Callsign: Catscratch.
Maverick: Now, you didn’t just graduate from the Academy, did you?
Catscratch: First in my class, sir.
Maverick: Ah.
Catscratch: I just wish there were still some Kilrathi around.
Maverick: <chuckles> I think you’re a little late on that score.
Maniac: <trumpets> Hey, Colonel Blair, I gotta ask you a question.
Catscratch: Oh my…! You’re him.
Maverick: ’fraid so.
Catscratch: I can’t believe my luck! Getting assigned to the same ship you’re on. Oh man, wait till they hear about this back home!
Maniac: Jeez, this kid lays it on thick, huh? <sucks up> Talk to you later, Colonel.
Maverick: Is that true, Catscratch? Are you doing a number on me?
Catscratch: Oh no, sir! I’ve been dreaming of a chance like this. The stuff I could learn from you, sir, the stories you must have…

I like this kid
Maverick: Oh, I’ve got stories, all right. But the only place you’ll learn anything is out there, in the cockpit.
Catscratch: Colonel, sir, it would be the honour of my life to fly on your wing.
Maverick: We’ll see, Catscratch. We’ll see.
Catscratch: Yes, sir.

What's this kid want from me?
Maverick: I’m not too much for nostalgia, soldier. Too many good people died. I’d rather move on.
Catscratch: But you’re… “The Heart of the Tiger”, sir.
Maverick: It’s just a name, Catscratch. Just because you’re the last man standing doesn’t necessarily mean you’re a hero.
Catscratch: Yes, sir.

Mission Briefing (B2A)
Briefing Room, TCS Lexington.
Eisen: Naismith, where is Colonel Blair? Ah, Colonel. Time to earn your pay.
Maverick: Yes, sir.
Eisen: It’s still not known whether these pirates are independent operators or somehow connected to the Border Worlds militia. Nevertheless, we’re here to put them out of business.
Eisen: Now, thanks to your excellent recon work, we do know the pirates base out of this frigate on the edge of the Hellespont asteroid belt. The job is simple: You and your wingman get in a pair of bombers, fly in there, and take them out! Now, I’ll assign two other fighters to provide you cover. Go to it.
Maverick: Right away, sir.

Eisen: Now, we remain uncertain as to where the pirates are hiding out, due to your less-than-satisfactory recon work. Therefore, I want you to lead a squadron on a search-and-destroy through these likely target areas. You and your wingman will have fighter cover. When you find the base, take it out. Good luck.
Maverick: Thank you, sir.

Vagabond and Maniac discuss the Border Worlds
Officers’ Lounge, TCS Lexington.
Vagabond: That’s where you’re wrong, old buddy.
Maniac: Oh, I’m not wrong. Border World radicals. That’s who’s causing all this trouble.
Vagabond: Listen to him: Maniac the political scientist.
Maniac: You ask the Colonel. We saw the same thing, it was a Border Worlder who dusted that Orlando Depot.
Maverick: Yeah. Has it ever occurred to you, Maniac, that the Border Worlds militia probably doesn’t have the technology to do what we just saw out there?
Maniac: We don’t know what they’ve been up to since the big war. It sure ain’t pirates out there carrying that kind of fire-power.
Vagabond: All I know is that the Border Worlds have always been Confed’s stepchild. They fought the Kilrathi, too. But what’d they get for it? Any time Confed needs a dumping ground for anything from toxins to prisoners, the Border Worlds is the place. They’re treated more like a colony than a partner. And if they are behind this, maybe they’ve become that desperate for their freedom.

Mission Briefing (B3)
Briefing Room, TCS Lexington.
Eisen: Ah, Colonel. I wish I had a little more faith in the data I’m getting from Confed Intel. We’ve just entered Border World territory, the Tyr system, where an important hostage has been taken, all because of the current tensions. Now, that means a ground extraction. But we have to find the hostage first and determine the best method of removal, which is where you come in. Now, Intel says the target is in this base complex on Tyr VII, but we need as much recon as we can get. Now, all our fighters are equipped with a new laser-recon device, fires like a gun, takes pictures like a camera. Get as close as you can and record as much info as possible. Now, be sure to consult your mission notes and your nav map. They’ll have a few more technical details.
Maverick: Any resistance expected?
Eisen: Well, my guess is they aren’t going to appreciate snoops with cameras down there. Try to make it a clean operation, we’re more interested in recon than kills. All set, Colonel?
Maverick: You bet, Captain.

Eisen hides what he's doing
Eisen’s Cabin, TCS Lexington.
Eisen: Enter.
Maverick: Recon data?
Eisen: No, uh, nothing so interesting. Just a trans to my grandchildren. New school year, they’re all excited. Did you want to see me about something, Colonel?
Maverick: Oh. Yes, sir: the, uh… assignment we’re undertaking.
Eisen: Yes, we’re just about ready to make the extraction, it won’t be easy. We’ll discuss it at the briefing. Right now, I’m due to check in at the bridge. I’ll see you in the briefing room.

Mission Briefing (B4A)
Briefing Room, TCS Lexington.
Eisen: Ah, Colonel. Confed has deemed this an especially critical mission.
Maverick: Any particular reason?
Eisen: <hesitates> Let’s get down to business, shall we, Colonel?
Maverick: Yes, sir.
Eisen: Enemy reinforcements are headed this way, so we have to move fast. A trooper transport has just joined up with us. They’ll be moving in right behind you, carrying the ground personnel who will nab the hostage.
Eisen: Thanks to your recon, we know just where we’re going and what we’re up against. The hostage is located in this structure. Now, you’ll need to cover the trooper transport’s descent to that location, then make sure it gets back here in one piece. Is that clear, Colonel?
Maverick: Consider it done.

You’ll cover the trooper transport as it docks with each structure, until the ground troops find the hostage, then bring them home. Try to make this quick and clean, Colonel. Maybe we’ll get lucky.
Maverick: Yes, sir.
