Wing Commander IV DVD edition on Linux

Be aware that I have not tested this myself, but if it's true then this might be the final answer for Windows 95/98 on Linux... https://github.com/kjliew/qemu-3dfx It's a 3DFX Accelerator plugin for QEMU Virtual Machines. Run Windows 95/98 as a VM and have accelerated graphics. I've waited a LONG time for a project like this to come.

If emulation is the way with the origional patch, I believe PCemu/86box already have 3dfx emulation. Though it's a pain to set up. Honestly I think the method for playing these movies, specifically Odvs' enhanced versions just needs to be redone from the ground up.

Registered just to share that I found getting gameplay to work was easy with the patch here and setting the renderer to legacy. Works fairly well! Interactable screens work flawlessly far as I can tell too.

Sadly I'm also on the boat where the major hurdle with getting the GOG Windows version to run is the cutsceens. No audio aside from choosing paths and no video besides rainbow bars. I tried every version of Proton, even Proton GE. I installed apps and dlls with Protontweaks to no beneficial end.

Using VLC player with Protontweaks and running under Proton, I can play the video files directly, but it doesn't affect the game at all regardless of the codecs installed with any of the available settings from the patch I linked above.

After two days of experimenting and no progress, I'm throwing in the towel and playing the DOS version. After how great Privateer 2 got running in Windows mode on SteamDeck, it's a bummer the same isn't true for WCIV.

Welp, played through a good bit until trying to take off after the second planet mission. Found the DOS version crashes trying to process a batch of music files on SteamDeck. Looks like the fight to play WC4 on the SteamDeck continues.

Found a fix for the music file. Turns out the DOS version has a corrupted file and it was easy to just copy over the DVD version over and keep playing. (Post covering this is here: https://www.wcnews.com/chatzone/thr...os-linux-failed-loading-music-tre-file.31355/) What I can share is that I found there's other games with the same video issue as WC4. Proton GE was the solution for many that I found though, so what I did is join the Discord and shared a post there in hopes it may find some traction there for the Windows version.
