That's why, ideally, Longbows should be backed up by their escort...
On that note, isn't it strange that when someone else goes for the bombing run, you are there to back them up in your light fighter, but when YOU go for the run, it seems like no one is ever there?:D

They're all like Maniac--as soon as they break and attack, they go after their own kills and start dogfighting with half of the enemy fighters, leaving the other half for YOU to deal with.

I maintain that the Longbow's slow turning rate means that missiles are your only reasonable bet of taking out Darkets before they can blast through your side armor while you spend forever turning to face them.

I prefer fighters to bombers... but if I were stuck flying one, I'd prefer it to turn more like the Devastator's inertial turning style, than the simply slow turns of the Longbow. Especially since a slow ship is a dead ship in WC4 can't escape missiles in a slow ship.

See, that's what turrets are for. ;)

Indeed. And that is why I like the Broadsword, Shrike, and Devestators' sideways-firing turrets. The single turret in back of the Longbow can keep pursuers off your tail, but it is too easy for an opponent to stay close to your sides where neither your forward guns nor your turret guns can reach him while he blasts away at your armor.

I have to say that I've always preferred firepower and armour to speed and manoeuvrability.

Firepower's only good if you can get in range of the target to HIT it. It's like having the biggest gun in the world, but that gun's so hard to move that by the time you aim it at your target, the target's already moved away and shot you with a little .22 pistol right in the back of yoru head.

Personally, the single turret on the Longbow is, in my opinion, the biggest mistake the designers made with that craft. If it'd had even ONE more turret on the top to give you some coverage of your sides you'd be rocking.

The Devastator got it right - you have a big gun in the front plus torps... but you've also got several turrets to cover your sides and rear since you're flying a pig of a ship.

You just know how to fly with it - too often the enemy won't stop until you're dead anyway, so this is seldom a problem. The only time I remember where this can become a headache is in one of the WC2 SO add-ons, where a lone fighter will fly just outside of your range while you're in a Broadsword.

Unfortunately, those turrets are the most wussiest lasers I've ever seen. Even if you take advantage of their rapid fire by using one manually, the single laser isn't enough to plink through even a Skate's shields.
