Hakaga Mission Challenge

Hehe, yeah, it's gonna be interesting to see what happens to the scoreboard now that Sternenwind has reappeared :D.

Though, guys, he is right about the Mission 1 scores... nobody has significantly challenged Sternenwind's scores in that mission. Come on, folks! ;)

@wedge

yeah, just luck with the Crossbow;) but I only tried once so I think I could do better than that^^

I which I had more time, I wasen't abel to get the Epee Highscore in Mission 9 so far...and it is MY Epee, I want all Epee Highscores ^^

but it is a shame.. I do not even have time to fly the new Simulator Missions with all ships, but next weekend I think I will get some Highscores, perhaps this time there are some guys who dare to challange me^^

*I am suprised about my Sabre Highscore at Mission 1.. it is the oldest record on the board ^^*

I whish I would know how Stringray fired his mace in Mission 9... must be a really lucky shoot with 6 kills or more....

But anyway, I am bakc and I will take some more highscores for sure ^^ but first, I will take all Epee Highscores^^

We don't know the limit the engine can handle - originally, it was limited to a lot less than you see in that mission, but after all our patches, we just don't know the limit. The limit of what the engine can handle, though, seems to be much higher than the limit of what players can handle. That is to say, we've had our testers begging for mercy, but not the engine itself :p.

"Begging for mercy?" Funny, I don't recall ever begging for mercy! You could have had me launch off the Firekka into a HUGE ASSED battle of Endor style setting. The 3rd Fleet mixing it up with the remaining 4 Hakagas with thier escorts, fighters shooting past me in flames, the Drakhai screaming over the coms, the Concordia blasting a Ralatha with the PTC, the Verdun getting blasted by an enemy bombing run... I would have just been sitting there like, "DUDE!!! %#@$&* SWEET!!!"

Yeah but my laptop will be crying for mercy. I finally have figured out the settings so that I can play in OpenGL without horrible frame drops. Now I'm filling Quarto's inbox with new bugs as I just started replaying the whole mod. :D Everything looks gorgeous now.

Eh, well, as I'm sure you remember, we've had plenty of comments from various people on the team about the difficulty of the Hakaga mission. That counts as begging for mercy to me :p.

Yeah I was definitely one of the vocal ones. Then everyone else played through it on the CZ and said it was easy. Now I've got to hold myself to higher standards of difficulty to meet the abilities of CICers. :)

... Feel free to btw... please? I'm begging you now! COME ON!!!:p

Yep i'd be in for that so thats one more vote. PC performance may be an issue for some people but they can be upgraded :D

As for difficulty I would much prefer epsiode 5 to be something very hard to win or stay alive and I think that would capture the environment that Fleet Action created is really like.

Episode 5? Heh. The first 4 have been pretty difficult in their own right.

I'm already confident my laptop is going to explode playing Ep5 when it comes to the climatic battle. I wouldn't be surprised if the entire radar is just blocked out with red and orange.

The problem is that the vision engine doesn't really use new hardware to its fullest. That is, no matter what uber-system you have once a certain, fairly low, number of ships is added it won't provide a playable FPS.

I think that's no longer a problem now that we have openGL mode...

I agree with this. When I originally ran Standoff in D3D I would see horrendous frame drops whenever more than a few ships were viewable. Now I get some occasionally but they are nowhere as bad as they were before.

As Quarto said in a thread before, the limit for SO has been pushed to point where it its abilities might be ahead of the players. Sounds like the outline of the Standoff equivalent of the Sol mission in WC3.

I do applaud Pedro and the rest of the team in giving us such a wonderful graphical update to the Vision engine, however, am I right in thinking that it still needs further work and development? I know there are still some hardware/driver configurations that produce ridiculously low frame rates (ie < 1 fps), plus for me, any wingman/enemy communications produce a slight delay in keyboard response. Ever so minor, however, enough to make gameplay more difficult than normal.

I have a Radeon X1650 in my temporary Windows XP rig and in 2d menus I have ridiculously low framerates, but once in flight framerates are fine.

My mouse cursor is extremely slow in the menus but fine in spaceflight as well.

I blame my crappy Intel card.

There are definitely issues to be fixed - remember, nothing about Standoff is final yet. :p

The mouse cursor thing:
This can be one of two issues, for one in order to scale everything all data must be copied. I optimised this in the latest release (so if you downloaded ep4 on launch day then grab Pete's patch), but theres room for improvment. If its slow you have two options, fast scaling, or no-scaling... or you would but I believe no scaling doesn't work... I'll make time right after christmas to address all of these issues.

It's an ever evolving piece of work, I'm highly tempted to just jack it in and re-do it in DirectX, if only because OGL support is so variable (every id game release is followed by a multitude of "hotfixes" from card vendors for this very reason).

I've also got a new engine in the works (I know, fan made engine #54453, but I still feel strongly about the worth of the undertaking) so I've been rather distracted from the patch.

This mission was AMAZING!! You Standoff guys are amazing! Wow! Definitely hands down THE BEST Wing Commander mission I've ever played (and I've played WC1 WC1[Secret Missons I think it was called] WC3 WC4 and I'm currently playing Prophecy and Secret Ops)

The messages from Tolwyn were awesome.. Then pulling up to the huge nicely modeled carrier with all those Kilrathi fighters taunting me. Those were the most intense intimidating Kilrathi taunts I've ever heard. I especially liked the taunts that were entirely in Kilrathi; it really gave me the impression that I was on their turf and they were tough intimidating alien creatures.

The sheer size of the Hakaga as well as that fact that it matched pictures and the descriptions of it (6 fighter bays/etc.) was awesome. Adding Drakhai fighters was awesome. I wasn't sure if they were programmed to fly any better than the regular fighters, but I made an effort to take them out first just in case.

The other amazing thing about this mission was that I didn't even know this path existed. I ended up playing through the Ep. 4 losing path thinking that's all there was and still thought the game was great. Then I read this thread awhile back and had to figure out how they got to that mission. What a treat to find an amazing series of missions that I didn't even know existed. Not only was this mission my favorite of all the games, but I think Standoff ranks up there with even my favorite Wing Commander games.
