MANIAC: You see, you don't know. You don't know, because Blair would fly on MY wing. Okay? Because Tolwyn, Eisen, they always... they'd check with the Maniac. You a Border Worlder? Come here for a second. Casey! My only friend. My only friend. Come here. Come here. Let's celebrate. Let's celebrate.

CASEY: What are we celebrating?

MANIAC: My voluntary demotion. I am no longer a squadron commander.

CASEY: But I thought you always dreamed of running your own squadron? Dreamed?

MANIAC: Yeah. Ha! It's more like a nightmare! Pilots whining all day about stats. You got the CAG screaming for results. It's all pain, no gain. Here. Let's toast! Let's toast. Maniac and Casey! All right. To the free, and easy life, of the Wing Commander.

ANDERSON: [loudspeaker] Lieutenant Casey. You are wanted in the ready room, at once!

MANIAC: They got that medal for you, kid, huh? Well, give the CAG a kiss for me, all right?

CASEY: Are you going to be all right? I'm the

MANIAC: Maniac. Of course I'm going to be all right. Listen. Hey, Casey, listen. You take my advice, all right? They're giving you the medals. You rake them in. When they want you to be squadron commander you tell them to shove it! All right? All right. Chalk up another one for the Maniac.

-

WILFORD: Attention! Congratulations, Lieutenant. Its not every day a member of my command receives the Confed Flying Cross. Wear it with pride. Its well deserved.

CASEY: Yes, Sir. Thank you, Sir.

CAG: Assembly dismissed! Good job.

CASEY: Thank you.

BLAIR: Well done.

CASEY: Thanks!

STILETTO: A Confed Flying Cross and a promotion to the Midway's newest "Bad Ass" squadron. Not a bad day's work.

CASEY: Hey, you guys got promoted to the Wolf Pack with me.

MAESTRO: Where we will no doubt be hopelessly lost in your shadow. Let's celebrate!

-

FINLEY: I downloaded these files from the data banks of the Ship Killer we just captured.

CAG: So, you're saying the wormhole these Aliens are using as their invasion point is artificial?

FINLEY: Well, artificially induced over a potential anomaly in their system which allows them access into Confed space. It took massive planning to pull this off, even with their technology. Here, look. After also analyzing the data from the beacon, Tactical thinks that the Aliens' initial foray into this system was recon only. I don't think that they expected to find us here. In any case, they didn't bring their whole fleet in.

CASEY: There's more?

FINLEY: Look closer at their structure. They're clearly reinforcing it for a permanent passage.

CASEY: And those plumes?

FINLEY: Judging from the IR emissions they could be the equivalent of cooling towers for the power array. The amount of heat generated to hold open a physical anomaly this size must be massive.

CASEY: So, what would happen if we took those out?

FINLEY: It could cause an overload... but I don't yet know enough about their technology to be sure. It might not matter. Judging from this, the towers appear heavily shielded. Probably take a full-on torpedo hit. We need to find a way to shut the whole array down. And soon.

CASEY: No problem. We have our new Plasma Weapon.

FINLEY: Yes, problem. Even if we worked around the clock to get this thing to even work with our technology-- which I'm not saying we can-- I'm not sure we won't blow ourselves to Kingdom Come the first time we try to use it.

CAG: Be sure. This may be the only chance we've got.

table before him.

MANIAC

Join me, plebe. Let's celebrate.

Casey joins Maniac, who pours him a shot.

CASEY
What are we celebrating?
MANIAC
My voluntary demotion. I am no longer a
squadron commander.
CASEY
I thought you always dreamed about
running your own squadron.
MANIAC
Dream? Ha! Nightmare. Pilots whining
to me about their stats; the CAG
screaming for results. All pain, no
pleasure, nothing but headaches....A
toast. To the simple, free and easy
life of a Wing Commander.

He drinks the toast. Then we hear...

PAVO
Lieutenant Casey. You are wanted in the
Briefing Room.
MANIAC
They're all ready to give you that
medal, Kid. KISS THE CAG FOR ME, WILL
YA?
CASEY
See you later, Major.
MANIAC

All Pilots report to the Briefing Room...

For just a moment, the mask falls away, and we see the pain beneath. Then
Maniac smiles, returns to his bottle. Casey EXITS through the Ready Room
door.

INT. MIDWAY BRIEFING ROOM

The CAG, Spyder, Stiletto, Maestro, Zero, Blair, and many pilots are all
present, all standing at attention as Captain Drake hands him a black box.
He opens it and looks at it (we do not see it)

CAPTAIN
Congratulations, Lieutenant. It's not
every day a member of my command
receives the Confed Cross of Valor.
Wear it with pride.
CASEY
Yes, sir. Thank you, sir.

They exchange salutes. The Captain EXITS.

CAG
Assembly dismissed.

Everyone falls out, surrounds Casey. Adlibs all around: great work, kid.

Midway's top squadron. Not a bad day's
work.
CASEY
Hey, you guys got promoted to the Wolf
Pack with me.
MAESTRO
Where we will no doubt be lost in your
shadow.

They both laugh and EXIT. Casey is about to follow, when Blair approaches
him.

BLAIR
You deserve it, Casey. Just don't start
thinking of it as shield.
CASEY
I won't, sir.

BLAIR
(after a beat)
Your old man would be proud.

He walks off.

INT. MIDWAY REC ROOM

The room is filled with pilots trying to relax from a hard life on the
front lines. Casey ENTERS via the Ready Room Door. Joins Maestro and
Stiletto at a table.

MAESTRO
I think this is where we get drunk and
celebrate.
STILETTO
In that order.

Spyder ENTERS and crosses to their table.

SPYDER
Casey. Have you got a second?

They move aside for some privacy.

SPYDER
Our Combat Air Patrol just brought in a
Confed distress beacon.
CASEY
Source?
SPYDER
(shrugs)
It's jump capable; could have come from
anywhere. Finley and the Chief are
taking a look at it, but it's in pretty
bad shape. It might provide us with
some additional intel... just thought you
might like to know.

EXT. THE MIDWAY (CG)

As the big carrier moves off into deep space...

ACT THREE--SERIES H PREPARATIONS

EXT. SPACE AN EMPTY STARFIELD (CG)

Hold for a BEAT. Then the Midway drifts into view. We SEE a makeshift
gantry under construction on the bow; a partially completed Ship Killing

INT. MIDWAY BRIEFING ROOM (OPTIONAL)

ON screen as a SERIES OF FUTURISTIC BLUEPRINTS flash by.

FINLEY (OS)
I downloaded these files from the data
banks of the Ship Killer we just
captured.

PULL BACK TO INCLUDE Casey and Finley as they report to Blair and the CAG.

CAG
You're saying the wormhole these aliens
are using as their invasion point is
artificial!?
FINLEY
(pointing at screen)
Held open by four ion shielded,
intermagnetically linked towers.
Destroy those towers...
CASEY
And you close the wormhole and stop the
invasion.
BLAIR
God knows it's worth a try.
CAG
But destroying something this size will
take a lot more firepower than the
Midway has to offer.
RACHAEL
No Problem. We have the big gun we
need... right here.

She taps a console, and that IMAGE we saw in the (G3) briefing of the Ship
Killer Plasma Weapon in operation comes up on the main screen. Finley
frowns:

FINLEY
Yes, Problem. I'm not sure we can
recreate the alien's plasma weapon,
Commander.
BLAIR
(cutting in)
Be sure. It may be the only chance
we've got.
