| A Ship Dealer is an independently-run dealership which offers spacecraft and spacecraft components for sale as well as repair and rental services. There are 33 ship dealers located on bases around the Gemini Sector. Ship dealers include a Showroom, a Ship Modification bay and a Sensor Booth. Avr ships is the ship dealer located on New Detroit. Exploratory Services' officer Gabriel Quentin wrote about the organization in GEMINI SECTOR: AN OVERVIEW. In 2670, Lynn Murphy believed that failing to deliver ore and construction equpiment from the Corcoran Corporation through the Church of Man blockade of Liverpool would cause ship dealers to begin running out of spare parts. | | A Mission Computer or Mission Machine is a automated interface offered by First Sector where privateers can accept missions offered by a variety of corporations. Mission computers are activated by an Image Recognition Scanner which scans the user's palm in order to track their identity. Mission Computers are located at every base in the Gemini Sector with the exceptions of the Derelict and Gaea. They are often built directly into base structures. All types of missions are offered through the mission computer. These missions are typically easier than those found at the Merchants' Guild and the Mercenaries' Guild but also offer a lower average payment amount. Unlike the guilds, the mission computers do not guarantee payment. |
|

|
| == Showroom ==
| | Privateers are limited to accepting up to three missions at once from the mission computer. The limit is imposed because pilots who accept more than three missions are statistically more likely to drop one which can result in lost money or casualties from undelivered supplies or undefended civilians and to prevent criminals from accepting all available missions and then subcontracting them out to allies and desperate individuals to control the market. Missions accepted from the Mercenaries' Guild and the Merchants' Guild count towards the limit. Members are paid immediately upon the completion of a mission. |
|
| |
|
| The showroom offers three types of spacecraft for sale, the Orion, Galaxy and Centurion. It is staffed by a salesman who is familiar with the spacecraft and who can provide potential buyers with brochures and their contact card. Payment is deducted automatically and the dealership delivers the new spacecraft to a landing pad. Ship dealers will accept used spacecraft as trade-ins at their Joan’s Index Value, including the Tarsus which they do not offer for sale. The resale value of a given ship's components are factored into the total value of the trade-in, with damage to components taken into account. | | The Terran Confederation uses the mission computer system to contract mercenaries due to the cost effectiveness and high success rate. 110 corporations in Gemini solicit missions through the computer system. Exploratory Services' officer Gabriel Quentin wrote about the system in GEMINI SECTOR: AN OVERVIEW. |
|
| |
|
| Any cargo aboard a ship is tranferred to the new craft. A sale can not take place if the ship being sold contains more cargo than the new one can hold. The Merchants' Guild blocks Ship Dealers from selling surplus cargo during spacecraft trade-ins although some less reputable salesman will keep excess cargo for themselves. Jump drives, secret compartments, sensors and navigational maps are also transferred to new spacecraft rather than sold.

|
| Ship dealers do not offer financing because of the risk assosciated with operating a spacecraft in Gemini. New spacecraft must be purchased for a lump sum. They do not offer insurance. Ship dealers on pleasure planets advertise rentals.

|
| The ship modification bay allows spacecraft owners to purchase, sell and repair upgrades and equipment for their spacecraft. Ships are moved from landing bays to the ship modification bay for any work. The dealership can repair damaged guns, engines, shields, armor, tractor beams, jump drives, maneuvering jets and sensors. The bay is also used for purchasing and loading ammunition in the form of missiles and torpedoes. Spacecraft owners are forbidden from purchasing missiles or torpedoes if they do not own a launcher as this constitutes intent to sell. The trade-in price for components and the amount charged for repairs is decided based on their level of damage.

| The Software Booth is the room in a ship dealer where spacecraft owners can purchase, sell and repair scanner hardware and maps. The booth has evolved since the deregulation of navigational software following the collapse of the Meshach administration. Because of this deregulation, spacecraft can legally operate without any navigational software for only the second time since before 1969. The software booth offers lineups of three scanner types each from Iris, Hunter and B & S.

| : Checking out the Galaxy Class merchant ship? Good choice.
| |
| : She's not as flashy as some ships, but she sure is practical.
| |
| : You get a roomy cockpit, loads of cargo space...
| |
| : ...and you can add top and bottom turrets if you feel you need more fire power.
| |
| : Did I mention she's a fast ship, as merchant vessels go? No? Listen...
| |
| : If you can't afford a Drayman...and who the hell can these days...
| |
| : ...you'll find the Galaxy fills all your shipping needs. And it's a steal at only $U3!
| |
| : We can give you $U1 credits for your old ship, plus $U2 for your add-on modules.
| |
| : You'll have $U4 credits left in the bank to load out your new ship.
| |
| : So...how about flying a Galaxy home today?

| |
| : If you're into aggressive space combat, then the Centurion is just what you're looking for.
| |
| : If it's security you want...
| |
| : ...the Orion sports better armor and shields, but you'll give up a little cargo space.

| |

| |

| |
| : Let's look at the numbers...
| |
| : This ship retails for $U3 credits.
| |
| : I can give you $U1 trade in for your ship, plus $U2 for your extras.
| |
| : Including your cash on hand, that leaves you short by about $U4 credits.

| |

| |
| : ...the Orion may not be fast, but she's a regular tank.
| |
| : She has the thickest armor and best shields of any ship on the open market.
| |
| : Sure, the cargo space is limited, but she'll keep you AND your cargo safe, get it?
| |
| : This ship has something for everybody. Merchants have cargo protection...
| |
| : ...and mercs can fly her with confidence that they'll come back in one piece.
| |
| : The Orion has racks for 2 guns, a weapon or tractor beam, and a rear turret.
| |
| : A great buy at only $U3 credits.
| |
| : Of course, you'd get a trade in of $U1 credits for your ship, and $U2 for the extras...

| | Mission Computer |
|
| |
|
| <gallery>
| | Mission Computers are ubiquitous. These are the most popular forum for hiring pilots. They are quick and typically built into the base itself. Many pilots rely upon their convenience for work. This automated system offers a variety of missions for widely varying pay. The military also uses this service to solicit mercenaries, a practice they are continuing due to its cost efficiency and the high mission success rate. Whether your ship is a cargo vessel or a killing machine, you can find work here. |

| ======Damaged======
| | The interface is friendly. After a palm print identification you may scroll through the available listings. If you accept a mission, you may use the arrows to continue scrolling through them. The Mission Computers follow the Guild standard that you probably ought not to take more than three missions at a time. This is for two reasons. First, pilots who regularly accept more than three missions usually end up dropping one and either losing someone money or causing massive casualties due to undelivered supplies or undefended civilians. Second, limiting the number of missions is an attempt to prevent mobsters and shady characters from accepting all the work and doling it out for a cut to flunkies and desperates, cornering the market. |

| Ship Dealer
| |
| | |
| The last common location is the ship dealer. These privately held dealerships are where you can buy the latest model ship. Indicating the ship you would like will undoubtedly lead to a sales pitch. Be forewarned — there are hitches that they do not mention in their pitch. Here are a few things you should know before dealing with these shysters:
| |
| | |
| * When trading-in a ship you also get trade-in value for your upgrades. If you have a turret, two meson blasters, shields and a cargo expansion, your trade-in value is the Joan’s Index Value of your old ship, minus wear and tear, plus the current selling price for each upgrade.
| |
| * Dealerships refuse to deal with transferring cargo unless it easy on them. You must have less cargo than the capacity of your new ship. If you trade in a fully loaded Galaxy for a Centurion, the salesman will turn you away until your cargo is less than the capacity of the Centurion.
| |
| * There’s no financing. Unfortunately, the life span of a pilot in Gemini is short enough that they are unwilling to take a risk on you making payments. Not surprisingly, no insurance is available for freelancers. This means saving up a lot of cash before buying much of anything. While inconvenient, the businesses have little choice.
| |
| | |
| Ship Modification
| |
| | |
| This is where you buy, sell or repair options. Options include armor, guns, turrets, cargo expansions and anything else that adds to the performance or longevity of your vehicle. Interfacing with Ship Modification is as simple as using a monitor. Use the buttons at the bottom of the screen to select Buy or Sell mode. Using the arrows at the sides, you can scroll through the available items. When you find an item you are interested in, simply touch the screen to indicate your selection. When you have indicated a gun or other such item, you are asked to pick the location on your ship where you would like it placed.
| |
| | |
| Please note: You are not allowed to purchase missiles or torpedoes without a launcher. This constitutes intent to sell and is strictly prohibited. Should you decide to sell a launcher that still has missiles or torpedoes allocated to it, the ammunition automatically sells at the going rate. Always buy ammunition last and sell it first.
| |
| | |
| Software Booth
| |
| | |
| The other useful department in a dealership is the Software Booth. This is where you acquire such essential equipment as maps and scanners. Both are imperative. It seems that this is one of the areas that was too rapidly deregulated. Without a map you may as well be flying blind. In over seven hundred years of space travel this is only the second time we have allowed pilots to fly about with no navigational software. While the manufacture of scanners is competitive (there are three brands each with their own high and low end models), maps are not. Scanners are important, maps are essential. Spend your money wisely.
| |
|
| |
|
| This listing should give you some sense of the recovery Gemini is making since the lifting of martial law. We are on the economic upswing. This is a sector of opportunity, a frontier for the risk takers of the Confederation. Your contribution is an important part of making us an immovable fortress on the Kilrathi border and a growth-oriented, prosperous community.
| | Mission Computer. Activate by clicking on the palm icon. When you find a satisfactory mission, click on the ACCEPT button. A mission that you accept no longer appears in the mission computer (it is summarized in your Personal Computer). |

|
| Ship Dealer. There are three types of ship available to you. If you are ready to buy a ship, click on the one you want and the salesman will offer you a deal. If you have too much cargo for the new ship, he will recommend that you sell part of your cargo and then come back. If you cannot afford the new ship, he will tell you so. When you buy a new ship, you will be credited for the trade-in value of your old ship, plus the current value of any modifications | | Mission Computer. The mission computer on every base in Gemini Sector offers a wide variety of missions. The assignments in this data bank am generated randomly from a large pool of variables. Therefore, you will hardly ever encounter the same mission twice. If you want to make more money on each mission, you should probably join the Mercenaries' Guild. Mission computer assignments also do not guarantee payment, so you may find yourself penniless even after a successfully completed mission. |
|
| |
|
| Ship Modification. Select BUY, SELL or REPAIR. Click on an item to purchase, sell or repair it (depending on the mode you’ve selected). If an icon appears when you buy something, drag it to the location on your ship where you would like to place it. | | Missions Offered. Attack, bounty hunting, defend base, patrol, scout. |
| | |
| Software Booth. Select BUY, SELL or REPAIR for scanners and maps. Click on the arrow buttons to scroll through the available equipment or (if purchasing) click on the item you are interested in and it will appear in the monitor. To buy, sell or repair the item, click on it in the monitor (when it is in the appropriate mode).

| Earlier designs for the game planned to have a separate ship dealer and repair/upgrade bay.
| | The greyscale image of the Mercenaries' Guild computer in the Wing Commander Privateer Player's Guide shows an earlier build where mission rewards were preceded by a plus. |
|
| |
|
| Initial sketches of the repair bay were by artist Paul Steed; Steed would often add scantily clad women to his concept work.
| | The game's text includes a computer message which isn't ever displayed: |
| | |
| | <blockquote><tt> |
| | We are sorry, but we have no missions to offer at this time. |
| | |
| | Please try again at a later time. |
