Library

MASTERSON
Excuse me, where do you think you're going?
PLAYER
I have some personal research I need to conduct.
MASTERSON
I'm sorry, sir, but access to the Oxford library files is restricted to students.
PLAYER
Look, couldn't I just buy a library card...?
MASTERSON
I'm afraid not. Good day to you, sir.

Initial Offer

Library

MASTERSON
I'm sorry, but library use is restricted to students and teachers only.
PLAYER
Yeah? What makes you think I'm not enrolled at Oxford?
MASTERSON
Students don't generally conduct research while armed.
PLAYER
Okay, you got me there. Look, my name's $NM. I'm a privateer.
MASTERSON
Sorry, $NM, access exceptions are only made for endowment sponsors.
PLAYER
Then how would I go about doing that? Making an endowment?
MASTERSON
If you have to ask, you can't afford it.
PLAYER
Okay, maybe we could work a trade. I could fly for the University...
...say, four runs at a reduced rate in exchange for access to your files, Mr...?
MASTERSON
...Masterson. Yes, your offer might substitute for an endowment...
You could start with an escort mission which pays 10,000 credits.

MASTERSON
Good, now listen. We need you to escort someone to Oxford.
You will find him in the Oxford system, in the vicinity of Nav 3.
The man you are to escort here is named Hunter Toth.
PLAYER
Hunter Toth? He wrote that book, what was it...?
MASTERSON
Prometheus Unplugged. The Church of Man has marked him for death because of it.
He's scheduled to give a commencement speech here...and he's already cashed the chit.
Unfortunately, the Church of Man has vowed he will never reach Oxford.
PLAYER
That's one vow those freaks will have to break. I'll bring him. Count on it.
PLAYER
Forget it. What do I look like, a charity?
MASTERSON
You're the one who brought this matter up.
If you're not interested in working for Oxford, then don't waste my time.

Library

MASTERSON
Where's Hunter Toth?
PLAYER
Still hanging around Nav 3 of the Oxford system, I guess.
I haven't flown the mission yet.
MASTERSON
Maybe I didn't make myself clear. Time is of the essence!
Toth is scheduled to deliver the Oxford commencement speech in just a few days!
You'll meet him at Nav 3 in the Oxford system...
...and escort him here, protecting him from Church of Man fanatics who want him dead.
PLAYER
All right, all right. I'll bring him in alive...or die trying.
MASTERSON
Oh, THAT'S a BIG comfort.

Rejected

Library

MASTERSON
Back again, eh? You must need library access rather badly.
PLAYER
Let's just say I'm reconsidering. What are the mission details?
MASTERSON
Oxford will pay you 10,000 credits to escort Hunter Toth here.
Toth has agreed to deliver the commencement speech this year.
You'll link up with him at Oxford system, Nav 3...
...and protect him from Church of Man fanatics who want to kill him.
Return here for your payment and next mission.
Have we got a deal?
Accept Refuse
MASTERSON
Good. Time is of the essence. Toth is in grave danger.
PLAYER
This Hunter Toth, he wrote that book...what was it...?
MASTERSON
Prometheus Unplugged. The Church of Man has marked him for death because of it.
Unfortunately, the Church of Man has vowed he will never reach Oxford.
That's one vow those freaks will have to break. I'll bring him. Count on it.
PLAYER
No thanks, I'm still not a charity worker.
MASTERSON
The University cannot afford to pay more.
If you're not interested in working for Oxford, then quit wasting my time.

In Flight

Talk to Hunter Toth

# You must be the guy I'm looking for.
# If this is Nav 3, you're my man.
# Is Hunter Toth aboard?
TOTH
Oh dear, are you one of those dreadful retros?
# Hey, I'm no Retro.
TOTH
Please, tell me you're not here to kill me!
# Sir, I'm here to escort you to Oxford.
# I hate cowards.
# You're a dead man.
TOTH
Thank you, young man. I just hope we don't encounter any retros...
# Don't worry.
# You're in good hands.
# If we do, we're dead meat.
TOTH
Of that I'm sure. Oh gracious me!"

Talk to Retro

# You don't know your butt from a wormhole.
RETRO1
Hunter Toth! You are hereby sentenced to death for your heresy! The execution shall commence...NOW!"

Failure

Library

PLAYER
So what's next? Evicting bookworms? Repossessing delinquent library cards?
MASTERSON
How about retirement?
PLAYER
What do you mean?
MASTERSON
Our deal is null and void. You failed a task I gave you.
That's not the way to earn access to the Oxford Library, sir.
PLAYER
Look, I need that access. Just give me another chance.
MASTERSON
Impossible, I'm afraid. Now kindly leave...or I'll have security assist you out.

E. MASTERSON - MISSION A

Summary Masterson is the university bursar who refuses you admittance to the Library, since you are neither a student not a professor. However, the university does need cash and is willing to accept a work-for-admittance arrangement. The first job is to escort a Drayman carrying a controversial author back to Oxford. The Church of Man is expected to impede the journey.
Payment 10,000 credits and partial completion of indenture.
Requirements Prevent the Drayman from being destroyed on its way to Oxford.
Opponents Hunter Toth's Drayman will be at Nav 3 in Oxford and will be attacked by two hostile retro Talons (fanatical pros). A second wave of three hostile retro Talons (also fanatical pros) will attack as you polish off the first two. Their goal is to destroy the Drayman and they will try to get past you to do so.
  • This mission might be a little tricky depending on how fast you can kill the retros. There will be a total of 5 retros, and that Drayman will be their main target. Afterburner and take each one out quickly. Also, make sure you take out all the retros before you land, because Toth will die if you don't. — "Deetchman"

WC:CIC Game Guide

Description

You'll have to fly four missions for Masterson in exchange for access to the library. The missions he gives you are far more legal than your previous missions, but that doesn't mean they are any easier...

Objectives

Meet Hunter Toth at Nav 3 in Oxford system and escort him back to Oxford. Defend him from Retro forces.

Scripted Encounters

Retro ships at Nav 3.

Notes

  • When you reach Nav 3, talk to the Drayman there. Hunter Toth is flying it. When you are done talking, you are attacked by 2 Retros. When these are destroyed, a further 3 attack. Take them out (missiles will do the job quickly), then autopilot back to Oxford. Hunter Toth will follow.

Comments : You don't have to kill all the other pirates, you only need to shoot down Rhombus (in the Galaxy). And the cargo? What the h... do you need that for? It's almost no money.

Mission : Masterson

Comments : "What do you need the cargo for?" Hey, a guy's gotta eat. And do you know how much my leather flight jackets go for? Plus that, it's obvious you don't party like I party...booze, broads and trips to Earth don't grow on trees. On top of that, I like collecting pilot slaves. Grab the loot when you can, and leave your kids something to talk about when you kick off.
