Mission Briefing
Visit Before Roman Lynch - Mission D
Library
- MASTERSON
- Excuse me, where do you think you're going?
- PLAYER
- I have some personal research I need to conduct.
- MASTERSON
- I'm sorry, sir, but access to the Oxford library files is restricted to students.
- PLAYER
- Look, couldn't I just buy a library card...?
- MASTERSON
- I'm afraid not. Good day to you, sir.
Initial Offer
Library
- MASTERSON
- I'm sorry, but library use is restricted to students and teachers only.
- PLAYER
- Yeah? What makes you think I'm not enrolled at Oxford?
- MASTERSON
- Students don't generally conduct research while armed.
- PLAYER
- Okay, you got me there. Look, my name's $NM. I'm a privateer.
- MASTERSON
- Sorry, $NM, access exceptions are only made for endowment sponsors.
- PLAYER
- Then how would I go about doing that? Making an endowment?
- MASTERSON
- If you have to ask, you can't afford it.
- PLAYER
- Okay, maybe we could work a trade. I could fly for the University...
- ...say, four runs at a reduced rate in exchange for access to your files, Mr...?
- MASTERSON
- ...Masterson. Yes, your offer might substitute for an endowment...
- You could start with an escort mission which pays 10,000 credits.

- Where's Hunter Toth?
- PLAYER
- Still hanging around Nav 3 of the Oxford system, I guess.
- I haven't flown the mission yet.
- MASTERSON
- Maybe I didn't make myself clear. Time is of the essence!
- Toth is scheduled to deliver the Oxford commencement speech in just a few days!
- You'll meet him at Nav 3 in the Oxford system...
- ...and escort him here, protecting him from Church of Man fanatics who want him dead.
- PLAYER
- All right, all right. I'll bring him in alive...or die trying.
- MASTERSON
- Oh, THAT'S a BIG comfort.

Talk to Lynch
- PLAYER
- I've been thinking...maybe you're right.
- Your man Smythe uncovered something important at Oxford...
- ...something it might take me months to locate on my own.
- LYNCH
- An optimistic estimate, I'm afraid. The Oxford stacks are voluminous.
- We'll both be better off if you rescue Smythe.
- I'm offering 30,000 credits for his return here, payable on delivery. Interested?

In Flight
Talk to Miggs
- # You're making me nervous.
- # Hope you're not looking for trouble.
- # Hey, what's going on here?
- Hey, bright boy, guess who's in deep trouble? Mr. Lynch wants that artifact. I'm gonna count to ten. Then I start shootin'. One, two, uh ... Forget this! Start shootin' boys!
Privateer Playtester's Guide
E. MASTERSON - MISSION A
Summary | Masterson is the university bursar who refuses you admittance to the Library, since you are neither a student not a professor. However, the university does need cash and is willing to accept a work-for-admittance arrangement. The first job is to escort a Drayman carrying a controversial author back to Oxford. The Church of Man is expected to impede the journey. |
Payment | 10,000 credits and partial completion of indenture. |
Requirements | Prevent the Drayman from being destroyed on its way to Oxford. |
Opponents | Hunter Toth's Drayman will be at Nav 3 in Oxford and will be attacked by two hostile retro Talons (fanatical pros). A second wave of three hostile retro Talons (also fanatical pros) will attack as you polish off the first two. Their goal is to destroy the Drayman and they will try to get past you to do so. |
- This mission might be a little tricky depending on how fast you can kill the retros. There will be a total of 5 retros, and that Drayman will be their main target. Afterburner and take each one out quickly. Also, make sure you take out all the retros before you land, because Toth will die if you don't. — "Deetchman"
WC:CIC Game Guide
Description
You'll have to fly four missions for Masterson in exchange for access to the library. The missions he gives you are far more legal than your previous missions, but that doesn't mean they are any easier...
Objectives
Meet Hunter Toth at Nav 3 in Oxford system and escort him back to Oxford. Defend him from Retro forces.
Scripted Encounters
Retro ships at Nav 3.
Notes
- When you reach Nav 3, talk to the Drayman there. Hunter Toth is flying it. When you are done talking, you are attacked by 2 Retros. When these are destroyed, a further 3 attack. Take them out (missiles will do the job quickly), then autopilot back to Oxford. Hunter Toth will follow.

Comments : You don't have to kill all the other pirates, you only need to shoot down Rhombus (in the Galaxy). And the cargo? What the h... do you need that for? It's almost no money.

Mission : Masterson
Comments : "What do you need the cargo for?" Hey, a guy's gotta eat. And do you know how much my leather flight jackets go for? Plus that, it's obvious you don't party like I party...booze, broads and trips to Earth don't grow on trees. On top of that, I like collecting pilot slaves. Grab the loot when you can, and leave your kids something to talk about when you kick off.
