A group of terrorists threaten to spread Anthrax derivative C into the atmosphere of a Terran Confederation colony world. Marine Commando Six is assigned to destroy the enemy stronghold. The 30 person unit is lead by Commander Winston Turner, and includes Wayne Banbridge, Manuel Ulandi and Johann Bulcher. At one point Turner is surrounded by a dozen drugged-out terrorists threatening to kill him. The mission is successfull, although costly -- 24 of the commandos are killed, including two who are left behind. Banbridge is badly wounded and, along with Turner, is saved by Ulandi, who earns the nickname 'the Madman'. The mission is classified and the deaths are listed as a training accident. Turner and Banbridge are secretly awarded the Fleet Cross. Although exhonorated by the Admirality Board, Turner continues to blame himself for the losses. He requests and is given a transfer to the TCSA in Houston.

A Confederation colony on Fawcett's World is captured by Kilrathi forces, a short time after it had landed there. Rather than have the humans slaughtered Baron Vakka nar Ki'ra orders that they be taken prisoner. The computer of the Confederation transport is searched for information, and all Confederation colonists who had at some time served with the fleet are taken to Kilrah where they are interrogated by the Emporer, before being killed. The Confederation survivors at Fawcett's World voluntarily speak to the Kilrathi, and work to live. Vakka's good friend, Harga, is made commander of Fawcett's World. This marks the second encounter with the Kilrathi Empire. While the capture of Fawcett's World is never officially known by the Confederation, it does become a common rumor. Vakka spends a year on Fawcett's World learning about the humans.

Brath'kar reports back that he believed the Terrans had been attempting to neutralize his ship's shields with their communications. Deep space tracking computers follow the K'rath'kan as it returns to the Kilrah System. This marks the first official contact with the Kilrathi Empire.

During the battle the Pilgrims attack Dewey Station 5, near Pluto. 1,400 civilians are killed when a Confederation strike carrier accidently destroys the base's south wing while targeting a Pilgrim slowship. Among those killed are Pierre Christian Devereaux and his wife Marie Sousex Devereaux. Their daughter, Jeanette Devereaux, survives. The incident is heavily classified by the Confederation. Following three days of intense combat, the Pilgrim fleet is repulsed. Terran offers to negotiate a peace settlement are ignored.

No attempt to re-take fallen colonies is made by the Confederation, which the Pilgrims see as a sign of weakness. The Confederation military is harshly criticized for this decision.

Whittaker's helmet is crushed under a wrecked computer. Whittaker rescues Tolwyn and brings him to an emergency pressure bubble. Both cadets spend six months in the hospital recovering from sulfur dioxide inhalation. Whittaker is awarded a commendation and the Distinguished Service Award.
