How the &%$# is it that a computer that is ONE HUNDRED times as fast as the ones that the original WC1/WC2 were designed to run on still isn't fast enough to run it on an emulator?

If you do actually have a system that's 100 times faster than what the original WC game was designed to run on, you're should be okay. A 1 GHz system should be okay for WC1/2 which asked for 12+ MHz. WC3/4, which wanted 66+ MHz, should run okay on a 3+ GHz or dual core 2x2+ GHz system. Like others have mentioned, this is all because the program is emulating all aspects of the system and dealing with another OS in between.
