WC Fleet Engagements

Good point--in the WC novels they are always whining about the carrier shortage--it takes years to build the shipyard, and then years more to build a carrier. Right before the Battle of Vukar Tag, Confed was reduced to about ten fleet carriers plus light and (brand new) escort carriers not normally used for front-line duty.

and, really, let's face it: Nowadays, combat airplanes are almost as lethal to navy ships as in WC, but you don't read about the USN retiring the other ships anywhere...

One thing I miss in WC is the fact that combat ships of today can strike at targets hundred of miles away with cruise missiles. The US navy used both airwings from carriers and cruise missiles from cruisers and destroyers when they attacked the taleban in Afghanistan in October 2001, same thing in Iraq 2003.

Thing is, usually there is only empty space for hundreds of thousands of miles in WC...
and they DO have remote strike capabilities in the CapShip missiles.

However, CapShip missiles can be shot down just as easily as a torpedo, which means that unless it can have decent shields and armor on it, you are even less likely to hit with it than with a torpedo.

Capship missles have longe range, but that's missing the point, the whole concept of having a fighter go there and strike the target is to deal with the enemy defences. Every time we see capship missiles on WC there's also a fighter.

Yeah, a modern bomber can cause damage to a carrier in modern day navel ops.... if it can get through fighter screens, the AEGIS air defense system, the phalanx point defense system, etc.- real naval ships aren't something to sneer at, and aren't really easy targets .... unlike most WC capships in game :-p

Same concept now, it's easy to down Tomahawk missiles with other missiles and CIWS guns (except the US faces nothing with such advanced technology.)

WC is not Early 21th century naval warfare in spave, it's WW2 in space. With missiles and lasers, of course. If you would want to reproduce air to air combat, it would be very different from the close combat combate based on guns that you have on WC. And we wouldn't want that.

Well, the post-WWII advent of guided missiles (and guided air-to-ground bombs) has allowed for a much greater standoff distance for combat. In WWII you had to close to about half a mile from your target to shoot it with guns, while with modern fighters you can launch heatseeking or radar-guided missiles from several miles away (the long-range Artemis ELRIR that can be fired from 20,000 m away would be a WC equivalent to this).

SPACE.

Well, of course tactics have changed a lot. You have missiles now, for one thing. And you don't use dive bombers, for another.

one "klick" in the real world is one kilometer.

However, in game, it just doesn't scale like that.
