To D.C.

Shipgate

Rear Admiral
So tomorrow I'm going on a trip to Washington D.C. and I've never been there before. Anyone have any suggetions of places to see besides your most typical tourist sites? Rememeber when Lisa when to see the Jefferson Memorial and was like, "Mr. Jefferson, I have a problem..." And then Jefferson was like, "I know your problem! The Lincoln memorial was too full wasn't it?"

You guys are the greatest. I'll miss you while I'm gone. See you in a week! And I'm sure I can throw a tomato at the White House without getting too close.

Crying babies on plane and no caffeine makes Shipgate a sad panda

I told myself I wouldn't get back on this thing until I was back. But I couldn't resist. LOAF, thanks for the guide to DC. Since the short time I've been here I've already heard from people to stay away from the Presiden'ts house. We are definately going to the Smithsonian tomorrow. While here in Maryland, I just want to get lost in these huge masses of dense trees they have everywhere. Okay, I'm really gonna go now.

Nods to Indoril, clenches fist, "Moonsword!"

I went to DC for my spring break. Here's some places I liked:

Air and Space. Number one right here.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (or something). Free concerts and performances in all kinds of styles every night.

Supreme Court. Awesome. Probably boring as hell if you aren't a history/political nerd like me, though.

National Archives. Where some of our hallowed documents are kept on display. The lines weren't even too bad when I went.

Capitol Hill: Hang out around back, and you might see someone neat. I saw my first famous person ever: Hilary Clinton!!!1

General tip on the Mall museums: All the tour buses disgorge their unwashed masses on the Mall-side. You're more likely to have a short wait if you go in through one of the anti-Mall-side entrances.

In general, if it's a nice day out, there's a lot to be said for just sitting on a bench on the Mall and taking in the scene.

I really want to goto DC. The Air and Space Mueseum has that new wing with the Enterprise, you should go there and take pictures

i checked out the enterprise wing when our high school swing choir went a few years back.

I'd like to suggest the national Cathedral. that place is downright astounding.

I don't think Moonsword appreciates this particular inane joke.

It's actually a second museum, which is at Dulles airport in Northern Virginia. I think they have a bus that'll take you there from the original museum. It's still a work in progress (the space stuff isn't even open yet - you have to look in at Enterprise and a few capsules), but it's very impressive. Walking into a hangar and seeing an SR-71 in front of you is a big shock.

(Enterprise meaning OV-101, not the Star Trek one... which is in the gift shop of the original museum now.)

Oh, hey, I've got a livejournal entry with some pictures from when it opened: http://www.livejournal.com/users/banditloaf/67643.html

Oh, yeah, absolutely - if you aren't from Europe, the cathedral is very impressive. (If you are from Europe, it's just a regular cathedral.)

Perhaps for a reasonable fee, you can have your brain scrubbed so you don't have to live with that for the rest of your life. :D
