Running Privateer 1 on Windows ME

Base memory=conventional memory, you have all the mem that you need.
But do you have EMS ????
check the config.sys, an archive EMM386.exe

Pff, I doubt there are still computer classes which go into the nuances of managing DOS memory. :)

LH stands for load high. ie loads the program into high memory as opposed to conventional memory. Stuffing as much as you can into high memory is a good way to free up conventional memory. Of course, minimising the number of TSR (terminate-and-stay-resident) programs you load is the best thing to do.

Try DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE 16384 RAM in your config.sys if it doesn't already look similar to that.

BTW, EMM386.EXE and HIMEM.SYS will not load into high memory (how can you load something into memory that isn't yet there?), so DEVICEHIGH will not work on these programs.

WOW, i really not have an idea :(, you have the EMS memory and all the convencional memory, try resetting the machine :)

No, he needs 16384 in the EMM386 line. I'm not sure what the default EMS amount is but anything more than 16MB of EMS, and apparently Privateer starts acting up.

Moral of the story - backup your startup files. :)

Repost your CONFIG.SYS AUTOEXEC.BAT and perhaps show us what you see when you type MEM /C |MORE

Use to following command from the c: propmt using your boot disk.

MEM /C > P1MEM.TXT

This will create a memory report to a text file call P1MEM.txt at the root of the c: drive. You can opening it with notepad and post it. If you know how to convert a text file in excel it would make in easier for us to read.

Forgot... this is WinME we're talking about. If I recall correctly, WinME likes junking whatever changes you make to config files. So, we're gonna try to get it working again, this time with a boot disk.

I never got it working on ME. Im talking about my compaq now. Ill post my config.sys and autoexec.bat in a little bit.

here they are:

Config.sys

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF

FILESHIGH=80
BUFFERSHIGH=40,4
FCBSHIGH=10
SWITCHES=/F
LH C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.EXE
