problems with using turret tractor

Spaceman
For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to tractor things in with the rear turret.

These are the steps I follow:

1. Target item.
2. hit alt-t to have turret select, then ctrl-t to have turret AI on (after making sure turret is set to tractor, not guns).
3. Fly by item so that rear turret can see it.
4. then it should tractor it?

When I try manually without the turret AI, it is just about impossible to match speeds with the item ('end' key doesnt work for this for some reason), fly a course so the item is directly behind the ship, and then switch into the turret and pick it up. Is there some easy method to get this to work?

thanks

Never tried to use the turret for tractoring. Had a hard enough time in original, darned if I want to try in THIS, but I guess I'll have to.

Usually all you need to do is have the item selected as turret target and click guns over to turret and from teh turret, snag it. Matching speed isn't needed, but you need to be inside the tractor's range. I THINK it's 2K It MIGHT be 1K and teh turret has to have sight of it.

Tractoring is one of the most difficult things to accomplish in the game. The only way I've had success is to target the object to be tractored in the front view (t), match velocity with the object (F9), target with turret (alt-t), overtake object to minimal distance without hitting it by using afterburner (tab), switching view/control to rear turret (ctrl-F1), turning off turret guns (g), switch on tractor beam (joystick/space bar). I can get to work without repositioning the ship about 1 out of 5 times. The targeted object is not only difficult to grab with the tractor, but very hard to see with the engines' flame effect. Interestingly, I have flame coming out of my engines in the turret view even when the ship velocity is set to zero.

After a "Kill Retro Talon Ship with 20 escorts" mission, the whole area will be littered with Retro pilots, but I'm too incompetent to pick any of them up, enslave them and sell them for profit. I just let them float happily in space while I head back to a base to repair my armor and replenish my proton torpedos.

Tractor range seems to be 1K.

I too have been unable to tractor anything from the turret. It is rather dissapointing, because I'm not about to give up 20 proton torps on my Centurion.

maybe a quick solution would just to allow a tractor on a missile mount with the missiles as well, since the turret seems so hopeless.

I just spent a few more hours trying to tractor with the turret, and I have to say, forget that!!! this game is supposed to be fun, after all. Either the turret AI should be able to handle the tractor, or we need the ability to add a tractor to a gun/missile mount in addition to a gun/missiles.

After practicising for an hour, I gave up and rammed the escape pod... the collision threw my ship backwards at a speed of 1200... If I tried to use afterburners, I could get the speed down to 700, but I was still going backwards out of the system. If I turned around, I could get going up to 2700!! It seems like the escape pod mass is way too much...

odd
admittedly the tractor's been much more heavily tested on the missile mount.
but I tried the tractor a few times with odd debris--the trick is to do F9 before going to the turret view with [
