As for the distinction between a war for independence of a breakaway colony/section of a nation, and a civil war, IMO a civil war is one in which the rebellion seeks regime change in the parent nation (e.g. the Bolshevik Revolution) while a war for independence seeks to separate themselves without toppling the incumbent leadership from controlling the non-breakaway portion of the nation. By this definition, the American Civil War was a failed War For Independence, since the Confederate states were attempting to exit the Union rather than to dissolve or replace the Union government for all states.
