Get The Proxomitron. You can easily disable it when needed and it's highly customisable. Very few popups can slip past it.

The only problem with it is that it disables banner ads as well. You can change that though.

The issue here is not how the pop ups suck, but how stupid it would be to try to outlaw them. Do you have any idea how difficult it is to pass international legislation about the internet? How long it took to make stuff like the WCT or the TRIPS? And, most importantly, do we want international legislation regulation what can and can't be done in the internet?

No. I think a lot of people want easy access to bomb making. Seriously though, it would be hard to implement a watchdog for things such as popup ads. I should know, I used to fight child porn and what a disaster that was. But that doesn't mean I won't utilise means to stop popups on my computer.

Of course you should be able to use means to stop popups on your computer, no matter what the occasional copyright fanatic might say. But even if you could somehow neutralize popups all over the internet, people would use another annoying method.

When I first heard about the Internet, I heard a bit about this. But the funny thing is I've never seen anything remotely related to bomb-making. Of course, I've never bothered trying and never will...

I have a copy of a docuement I got off the Internet which included bomb making, that the FBI want. With good reason. If criminals or terrorists get a hold of this they'd have a field day. Understandably, I'm taking this to the grave. It's far far too dangerous to fall into criminal hands.

Yeah, I wouldn't want the terrorists to get ahold of Philip Tanaka.. boy.. after some torture and mind bending the secrets they'd get out of you!

Heh. You know how I dare people to let on to Trace Dahlgren that they are against terrorism? Well, she apparently tortures terrorists to death for information. The sort of person who'd scare the piss outta Cobra. Anyway, at least it's offered in a damn popup.

At least it's not offered in a damn popup, I meant to say. Boy, I bet Obi Wan bin Laden would love it if he came across it on the camel sites he visits. :)

Outlaw them. No need to to have Big Brother either, we can do that ourselves! Find a pop-up, report the website!

Now, that's good thinking.

You report it, and an online team goes over to the website, verifies the pop-up add and then orders the site eliminated. In best case, a warning is given. Repeat offenders are immediately eliminated.

That's my idea.

Personally, I like the internet it its current, nearly-unpoliced state. Any sort of policing efforts would probably fail to address the real problem, but would instead go after easier targets, like abandonware sites and such.

Reported by whom? Eliminated by whom? That's the whole problem. This would require a police estate. Do you really think you’d like to give someone the power to close down websites worldwide without any due process? Quatro is right, you know, if you open the door, they would start going after all kinds of different, originally unintended targets.

Wow, just imagine if only Wing Commander sites were allowed to exist on the internet.

Good point Quarto...

Never mind that idea.

I just wish something could be done to cleanse the web of these pop-up adds.

Regarding pop-ups, I believe that individual users should be able to decide what data does and does not enter their PC. It's the same as being able to decide who can enter your house--unwanted files/ads are "intruders". It's doubly important for those people who have to pay by the gigabyte for the data that they receive--sort of like how if you own a cell phone you have to pay the phone charge if a telemarketer calls you even though you didn't want to talk to him in the first place.

I've had enough of these things!!!

I can't seem to stop them! Even if you get a anti pop-up software, it doesn't matter; they cut right through it after a few times.
Get a real browser. Two excellent alternatives:
1) Opera 7
2) Mozilla 1x

Both have the ability to block popup ads. Problem solved. End of discussion. Next question?...
