At Lackland AFB they perform the surgery for all Active Duty members free of charge. I know a few crew chiefs who got that lucky TDY to Lackland and came back spectacle free!

I would think that it was more of taking the shot to get rid of the glasses for free, than some kind of vanity thing. Glasses and contacts are a pain, and getting rid of them would be a plus, regardless of your looks.
