Different people, different uses. I personally haven't sent an SMS ever. I've never needed to, nor wanted to. In fact, I don't know how to send one, nor do I really care.
The teen crowd, for the most part, cares about personalization - i.e., wallpapers and ring tones. Even though 90% carry the same ring tone, they feel unique in some form or other.
I can't say I havne't fallen for that, for my phone sports an F-15 banked when its flip is closed, and until I found it hard to read, a nice vertical F-15 cockpit view when it was opened. (I turned it off because it made the program menu hard to read). On the other hand, my phone just uses bitmaps and MIDIs/WAV/AIFF/MP3/etc for ringtones that I transfer onto it via computer link, so it only costs me that few minutes to get it right. (Bluetooth is nice in this respect...).
Of course, it's nice to surf the web with it, too, with a web browser that rivals modern ones (because it is a modern web browser). Heck, nothing beats getting the absolute latest weather forecasts and reports when one is about to go flying. Nothing like checking on the flight line!
