Freespace 2

If you look at the stats (Milo, author of StarShatter did a great job of putting the analysis together) FS2 did not kill space sims, since the decline in the slope with sales of FS2 was not statistically significant. Sadly, they were already on there way out, and FS2 was a last gasp at the end of the line. However, if they had marketed it better, it could have helped bring things back. I only found out about FS2 by accident, and I was glad I found it. But let's please not start that argument again.

And we're already established time and time again that it *did* have a huge impact on Wing Commander. Don't bring this idiotic Freespace apologist crap ("If it'd been marketed better it'd sell better! Wasn't our fault!") here.

There has been talk on and off about making FS3. Some folks have suggested collaborating with the folks who made the original FS2 and who were conceptualizing the third in the series.

The strongest "talk" anyone's given to Freespace 3 in the last couple years was Derek Smart saying he'd like to take a stab at it, which is both extremely unlikely and horrible news on its own.

How much characterization can you give Alpha 1-4?

Sniff I miss Alpha three...that twinkle in his eye:(

And freespace two had some amazing graphics and pretty good missions, its just a shame that they didn't try to add a greater degree of immersion to the plot.

FWIW, I'll take no plot over Starlancer's plot any day. That idiotic excuse for a plot ruined the game.

Yeah, and it didn't help that every mission is either "BLOW UP 249 SPACESHIPS" or "ZOMG KILL THE COALITION SUPERWEAPON".

My favorite space sim non-WC space sim is probably Independence War. The newtonian combat is great fun, and the Indies are more interesting enemies than typical sci-fi fare. Things like the relatively weak plot and the COMPLETE LACK OF MUSIC keep it out of the top, though.

Yeah, Starlancer was freaking rediculous!

I would kill every coalition fighter and bomber, defend my bombers while they torpedo capships, rescue the unarmed civilian transport, and save the entire war effort in a single mission, but miss one little secondary objective and FAIL THE WHOLE THING!

WOW that got old real quick. I gave that game up on the 22nd or 23rd mission when your Japanese super carrier is attacked by 20 torpedoes from capships and bombers within a period of like 10 seconds and you have to take them all out, if 3-4 get through, forget it.

I did like Freelancer alot!

Was I the only one who quite liked Starlancer? Its no WC, but amongst the best non WC titles for me.

Starlancer was sure nice to look at and I played through it but its cliché-plot was really embarrassing and gameplay was not always very good (those in-game cutscenes...).
And I had the horrible German translation in which the last mission briefing had the wrong speech, so I wasn't briefed on the Ion Cannon.
I liked FS 1 and 2 a lot better than Starlancer.

I didn't mind playing starlancer, the graphics where good, sure the story wasn't the best but you know what, it had WAYPOINTS as opposed to FS2. I've played that too and it just felt like a direct port from something you'd goto an arcade to play. I half expected it to print onscreen something similar to: please insert 2 more credits to play. Can't say that hooked me. Little things like waypoints, character development and other fine details that involve the player deeper into a game make all the difference.

I enjoyed Starlancer....loved it actually, still I'd be the first to admit the plot was utter crap and although it wasn't quite as bad as Freespace in the aspect of character immersion, it certainly left a lot to be desired. In Starlancer, I had no idea who I was and none of the pilots ever reacted to me (occassionally thru the flight comms). The lack of character immersion definitely hurt it in my opinion the most, if it had character immersion and an actual role to play then I think the plot and poor mission design would have been easily overlooked. Still, graphically I thought it beat Freespace 1 hands down and played smoother than Freespace 2. The interface was far more realistic (at least Starlancer had somewhat modelled cockpits) and the missile lock was very well animated. I still dust off Starlancer and play through it occassionally. Freelancer, I think was much better but for me the online play ruined the game...I wasn't online more than a week and already I had the best of everything, knew where everything was and that was it.

Oh, good, you're not going to argue about what I just told you not to argue about... you're just going to make your argument and then... what? You sure are bright -- did you see this ending any way other than me banning you?
