First post and Question

So, to sum it up, except for the game itself, its manual, and a few reviews here and there, the amount of SC material - even fan generated one - is virtually nil, nothing, nada, rien, nichts... Is that it ?

Well, then I guess I've gotta find an old DOS based PC to get my SC fix... Maybe I'll even finish the damn game this time... (I've stopped a bit after Stern's death, no spoiler please !)

You might be able to get SC working with MyJemm or DOSBox. It'll be a similar procedure to getting Privateer or Armada to run. Otherwise.. yeah, this is probably the most concentrated collection of Strike Commander fans in the world right here.

I've tried using DosBox since I have WinXP, and the game crashes when I start to launch the 1st mission... "Exit to error : bad page or something" Traning missions work fine though...
Well, I guess my quest isn't over yet, but that's still the best I've been able to get since 1998...

I just 'rescued' my old heavily upgraded Compaq 386 for use of the old games. Its processor has been upgraded to 486 standard and it has a SB Pro, Adlib Music Card, Windows 3.1 and 8mb of ram. It has a 3 1/2 inch floppy and a 5 1/2 inch floppy. Is it capable of running Privateer? (Yes it has XMS installed.)

Can you combine myjemm with VDMSound? Anyone ever tried. (Would try, but having an ISA soundcard on irq 5 so I wouldn't know if it is VDM or the real one...)

Hmm . . . with the fact that most of our favorite WC (and neighboring) games are older and require less-than-modern machines, perhaps this community would find advantage in someone who runs a small side-business constructing good-quality WC machines. If I can find the right source for parts, I might be interested in starting up such a production in the interest of keeping older WC games easily accessible (folks would have to find their own copies of WC games, though, since that'd be the hardest part).

If I commit to this, would anyone be interested in helping me acquire the neccessary components? (Machines, obviously, would be sold to interested parties for a reasonable price)

The problem is not with the machines, per se, but with the fact that you pretty much have to have a real deal DOS computer. And the problem with that is programming the computer so it can operate the DVD drives, and high dollar sound and graphics stuff.

Well look at the bright side.
One of these days Uwe Boll will make it into a movie and use actual in game footage in the movie, like he did with House Of The Dead!!!!!!

.....Wait that's a bad thing, never mind.

Problem being?
DVD Drives are really a no problem. Just use any of the generic IDE CD-Rom drivers.
Graphic cards are really a no problem. All should still be vesa compatible.
Sound cards are only a problem if you are talking PCI sound card. If you take an old PC with an ISA slot again any isa soundcard should work without problems. To find an isa card is realy the only problem in the list. And not a very big one right now. Of course this will change over the years...

The current build has some problems.. the beta for 0.62 will run SC/Armada/Priv okay.. but takes some real tweaking. When the full 0.62 comes out we'll try to make some custom config files and a walkthrough to get people going.

MyJemm should work however there will probably be no sound...

MyJemm doesn't work in XP.

Actually, what I had in mind was to buy up older computers, put reliable harddrives/etc in them (I know some older computers' BIOS won't accept larger harddrives), and partition the harddrives to have both a pure MSdos boot, and then a win95/98 boot.

The true challenge would be acquiring the proper video cards and drivers for WCP/SO, and finding neccessary dos drivers for other things (such as mouse). And maybe finding a legal way to get that many copies of MSDos. My main concern, though, would be the cost of the finished machine. I'm not too concerned about being paid for my efforts, but I don't have a whole lot of money to front to get the first few machines up, running, and sold.

Funny this topic came up now. My employeer is hosting a county-wide equipment sale as I type. We have probably 30 computers, 486s thru P3s, up for bids. I usually snag 1 or 2 for myself for the heck of it. An entire system can usually be had for under $50-$75.
