No I´m not. FARC are communist and I said I don´t like them. As for Saddam, I don´t recall him being in left or right.

being that he is a dictator, and has absolute power, the ultimate in big government, he is as far to the left as one can get.
if he was to the right, or at least closer to the center, there would be elections.

I don´t know which are your definitions of *Left* but i don´t think that Hussein is in the *left*

By definition, Left is closer to democracy than Right is. (Dicatorship, fascism, where's the difference?) IIRC, Hitler was as far left as anyone could get (so far to the left that the scale turns into something like a pretzel instead of a plank), and he tried to change things. We can all agree he was evil etc., but he was a reformist. As far as I've seen/heard (looooooove today's media...), Hussein doesn't want to change his society.

Starkey: It's really that bad down there, huh? :( POS media... Ok, so there may be floods and elections, but that situation is heavier than bike-thefts...

Mystery Muppet, I don´t know what Left means in your part of the world, but I have always known that:

left-wing - on the left of the political spectrum. The term can include communism, socialism, or liberalism. It originated in the seating arrangements in nineteenth century European parliaments, where the conservatives would sit on the right side of a semi-circle (as seen from the point of view of the presiding officer, often the king) and the socialists on the left. The more radical the group, the further to the left they sat. Extreme leftist governors: Stalin, Fidel Castro

right-wing - on the far conservative side of the political spectrum, the opposite of left-wing. Right-wing politics usually favors: a free enterprise system in which business is unfettered by government regulation; a strong military; does not favor much spending on social services, and is "tough on crime." The term right-wing can include authoritarians and reactionaries. Extreme rightist governors: Hitler, Mussolini

As for the situation down here, I think that the least probable place in the world for a war in the next, say, 30 years is Brazil. I was just pointing out that we need an adequated army just to be ready if any (improbable) situation comes up.

If Ghost ever gets a crapped capybara we're all in trouble.

I wonder who would win if they made a combat simulation between your planes above and our *Special Edition* Mirage IIIEBR™, our carrier-launched (oooh) revamped A-4s and our new secret weapon - The ALX Super Tucano, equipped with two guns and two MAA-1 Piranha missiles:

Our A-4ARs can be used without a Carrier and were refited 2 or 3 years ago with new avionics (radar like the one in the F-16 but not too sofisticated, tragetting system, etc).
The Mirage are good but are old so probably yours are better, i think.
I don´t know if you ahve B-type planes, so prolly we have the upper hand here.
You have Tucanos!, i´m laughing at you! we have the IA-53 PUCARÁ and the mighty Aermacchi and some Super Etendards

P.S. it hought that you decommised your carrier, that is the same class than our ARA 25 de Mayo, decommised almost 10 years ago.

Yeah, we finally sold that junky 1945 "Minas Gerais" carrier, but we bought a *newer* 1965 French Foch-Class, named NAe-1 "São Paulo":

See those relics standing on it? Those are the A-4s!! Our Navy is committed to preserve the history of the airplane! Our A-4s are Navy planes, so I guess they will only fly off the carrier.

As for the MirageIIIBR, they do suck, as they have never been updated. That´s why they will change them for one of the planes listed on the poll above.

We do have a multipurpose fighter-bomber that is supposed to be our best plane - The Embraer A-1 AMX:

amx10.jpg

It is an ok plane, but I think a 737 can overrun it... :(

F-5 Tiger II:

Junky MirageIII:

Pucara vs. Tucano! What a fight that would be!

How many A-4s carry your Carrier?
And you have something to protect him....?

BTW do you have money to buy those fighters?

Its homepage http://www.mar.mil.br/nae.htm says that it can carry "37 planes" and "2 helicopters", but I think we only have 20 A-4s... We used the ol´Harriers on the other carrier but they weren´t being able to get those things on the air safely anymore so they were sold to some African country.

It has a crew of 1.030 men (why so much?), 2 catapults, max. speed of 30 knots, and a 266 x 51m size.

We do have some ships (even subs, can you believe it?) to protect it but I don´t know how big is the carrier group http://www.mar.mil.br/navios.htm

p.s. Shhh! We don´t have the money... don´t tell these Americans... we might buy their F-16! We´ll just put the bill on the "foreign debts" list and pay it... someday.

Old ships need big crews :(
The old Cruiser ARA General belgrano had a crew of +1000 men
You are closer to the Mirage than F-16 or Mig-29.
Really, i don´t think that Brazil can´t make a big purchase (10 planes), maybe refitting some fighters, or buy some mid-level fighter (like the Mirage F-1 or 2000).

(SIGH) O.K., I'll buy the F-16 for you. How much are they?

There goes the Alpine skiing trip.:(

Seriously now, they already have US$ 800 million to pay for those planes. The Air Force has been saving money for some time so they were able to gather part of that amount and ask an extra budget to the government.

Rumors here have the Gripen and the Mirage as the current favorites. 12 fighters will be purchased.

Embraer (partially owned by Dassault) is lobbying for the Mirage, while Varig has associated with British Aerospace and is pressing the generals to buy the Gripen (which I prefer).

you are more than just alittle off, but democracy is in the right as the people are in control, but a republic, which the US is, is in the middle ground. but thats enough of this topic, this not aloud...

Starkey: Oh well, I'm probably wrong, then. But, like Happy said, let's leave it at that and move on.

WildWeasel: SubSpace? I don't recall hearing about it. Fancy PMing a URL?

Gripen... :) To my knowledge, it's a little too weak for carrying bombs. But, I suppose you won't have to tear down mountains to get your point across in aerial battles. *Scampers off to www.mil.se to excavate some facts*
[Doh, excavation failed!]
