Firefalcon, from your stance I guess that you're no hotshot writer with ideas of endless dogfights alternating with steamy Rachel scenes.. - so, I'm looking forward to your work, wherever and whenever available.
Don't worry about being stuck with existing characters too much - while it is right that it will cause uproar among fans, the work isn't for the trashcan. It will cause some work and editing, but in your case I'd rewrite the characters and replace them with a set of fresh faces. Yeah, it'll lose some of the fun to fool around with well-known characters, but you'll see that the story will get a new angle, and often turns out much better than originally intended.

It took me a while to read your reply, not to mention how many times did I have to read. It is amazing how small our font are when they appear on screen for sometime.
I will keep it short.
Go ahead with your fan-fic (based on Prophecy/Secret Ops) my opinion is that all novels/stories must have a basis and must come some idea otherwise there would not be many interest fiction to read. Work on what you can for the time being and keep me posted on what you got.
At the moment I am still waiting on word from people who are offering/suggesting plans on how to create a website or join another as myself and several others are not so technical minded with the internet...(funny that I am using the internet for this forum....go figure) Currently the "Anthology Project" is still in the early stages and I have heard some feedback from people who are saying that they have started on writing on some fan-fiction.
So far there is a general agreement that Anthology will be set into different categories like I mention in a previous thread -
Pre Kilrathi War (Anytime set before 2634)
Early Kilrathi War (2634-2644)
Mid Kilrathi War (2644-2654)
Late Kilrathi War (2654-2664)
End Kilrathi War (2664-Battle of Earth-2669)
Post Kilrathi War - Black Lance-Border Worlds Crisis (2669-2671)
Black Lance Remnants - Kilrathi Feudal Planets events (2671-2680)
Nephilim Crisis (Prophecy/Secret Ops) (2681-onwards)
Oh for everyone reading this...Plywood Fiend and I have complete the Introduction and Chapter 1 of a special fan fiction which is a dedication to the many years of Wing Commander and hopefully maybe post them up one chapter at a time or post it up as one whole. The next hint I am giving out is the title which is - "Fall of the Flag"
It is nice to hear that you are also attempting to write another genre/style of fan-fic as I am also writing several different fan-fiction based on several different ideologies or based upon other games and or movies.
To give you an idea what I am doing I have the following
'Cabion Trilogy' (Fantasy)
- Based upon 3 siblings who were orphan at a very young age are caught up in a civil war and learn they have specials gifts that could save the kingdom.
Alien vs Predator (Well that says for itself)
Well if the several books release and the movie release sometime ago I created about a marine company in a five year campagin going planet to planet eliminate the Alien infestation, while in the meantime they are closely monitored by the Predators
Diablo (A wonderful game created by Blizzard...I salute them)
Two different stories.
The first based on the first game of a travelling band of adventurers who seek fame and fortune stumble across Tristrim and learn of the ancient horrors that plague the township. [Sounds corny does it? But the basis was easily set up and I dont see why not ruin it]
The second is based upon the second game release with a group of adventures who join the Western Armies who aid in the battle against the dark minions which have been unleashed throughout the known kingdoms and try to find the means to end the war which has last for 20 years.
Dirigent Mercernary Core (Novel- Sci-fi)
This is based upon a novel series by Rick Shelly which I enjoyed readingis about a young man from Earth who wants to join the Military but could because of funding/resources and changes in government has been offered to join a semi quasi military unit or a mercenary core after hearing stories of another man from Earth who fled the planet to another planet so he could serve in the military.
Paladin Series (Personel)
This is my biggest project which I have been working on for the last few years and probably be the biggest fan-fic I would ever created.
It is about the Paladin Order which is a ancient order of knights whose sole purpose is to aid people/groups or kingdoms who are in dire need of aid.
All I can say is that Paladin Order is under threat because of a prophecy being foretold about their downfall and the resurrection of the 'Lost One'.
This would take too long to explain but to sum it up...Fantasy, Order of Knights, Prophecy, Battle of two forces, End of the World-type.
Star Wars
At the moment I am creating a story which may offend some people is about Luke Skywalker having a vision which he later refers as the Trinity Prophecy which foretells the 'Second Coming', which is the second fall of the Jedi Order and it is restore with the help of 3 people or in this case 3 children. Why that?
Well lets just say I have a thing for 3 and some of the stories I write I used some people I know as a basis to work on to help me create the identity of my main characters.
X-COM (Microprose Game)
Ah one of my beloved games I have treasured so much.
Basically it is following the lives of different people around the world and how they meet together and forming a large force that attempt to take out a dangerous alien threat which has been terrorising Earth for many years.
This is only a small portion of what I have being creating and changing for sometime and I have many more fan-fics I like to write/create and what nots.
As you can see I have so many ideas and dreams I like to try and I share the same boat as you are.
But in the meantime do what you can and let me know how things are going with the current fan fic
For everyone - If you have completed a draft which you would like to add to the Anthology project, let me know and send me a copy at alan_spanky@hotmail.com I would be interest to see what people have written

No worries...I'm not trying to make any kind of written porno or some lengthy battle with bajillions of ships (mind you, those battles are in there, but I try to condense them as much as possible). In some ways, I'm getting a little hung up because I'm trying to move the story along, but with all that I intend to include, it requires a more profound level of plot development. The result is I'm forced to slow things down a bit and focus on interpersonal relationships, reactions, yadda-yadda, include some humor so it doesn't get too trippy...and then take it from there. Ultimately, it's supposed to be fun, but also deep, profound in places, and something that's supposed to make an impression. One thing I'm trying to focus on is keeping things so interesting, borderline convoluded, and intense that the reader can put it down after reading two pages, come back a week later, and still feel like they're on the edge of their seat with little or no warm-up/warm-down time. So it's supposed to be a bit of an adrenaline ride and a mind job...but by the end, I hope to explain everything well enough that there's no questions left in anyone's mind, things make sense, and everything's "cool."

That sounds like sound advice, and normally I'd be happy to go along with it. But in this particular instance, it would kind of defeat the purpose of the story if I went with a cast of brand-new characters. My whole sentiment is that Prophecy & Secret Ops left too many holes, too many questions, too many things unsettled and unresolved...that it deserved something that felt more like a conclusion (and the truth is that it's been so long since both came out that it doesn't look like we're going to get an "official" story anytime in the near future in this regard). That's what my little (ok, FAR from "little!") trilogy is supposed to do...and hopefully not tick off too many fans in the process.
To rip out the characters would destroy the plot and the point.So unfortunately, I think I'm going to have to go through with this thing and hope that when all is said and done that people around here don't completely hate me for it.
I intend to do all the characters justice, but I know there will be readers who will go through it, read one section, and start shouting, "well that wouldn't happen because..."But we'll see...maybe I'm overreacting. Maybe everything will be hunky-dorey. Besides, it's not like anybody's making any money off it or it's being thrown up as anything anywhere near "authentic" or "official."
It's all meant in good fun and maybe just a handful of people will actually take time to read it and say, "ya know what? That wasn't half bad." I guess that's my big hope here.
So for future fan writing in Wing Commander, I'll definitely go with a new cast. But for this trilogy, win or lose, it has to be the famous characters.

Dahan, sounds like you've got a lot of writing projects on your plate, many of which definitely sound interesting.
I'm a closet fan of the Diablo Universe, the fantasy genre, and almost anything to do with knights. So best of luck in all your works - I'm sure there will be others out there who will equally appreciate what you're doing! I also apologize for all my lengthy posts. I've always been lousy at condensing things into just a few, brief phrases. One idea sparks another which sparks another...and well, you get the idea.
If it becomes annoying, someone just poke me with a stick and I'll try to keep it simpler and start grunting and pointing like a caveman or something. Lastly, Dahan, I'll be sure to keep you posted (hrmmm...kind of a pun there what with this being a forum and all!) on the progress of my story. When the first part is done, I'll probably plop it up on a page somewhere and provide a link to it with a separate post in the fan fiction section of the WCNews CIC page here. There's probably no real point in keeping you updated on every chapter as I finish it, so when the whole thing's done, I'll just be sure to alert ya to it (unless you'd prefer I check in more regularly?).
Other than that, good luck with the new fan fiction site. I'd offer to help, but my website skills are rudimentary at best (DEFINITELY not skilled anywhere NEAR enough to do what needs to be done for this project), and I've got quite a bit else on my plate currently.
