I thought Beast Machines wasn't half bad but I was annoyed that Chetor suddenly turned into some kind of badass without reason. I really like Optimus fighting for the organic life left in Cybertron. It really didn't make much sense, but it was new and interesting at least.

The only thing exceptional about G1 IMO is Optimus Prime (a major part of that being being Peter Cullen). I think that Beast Wars/Machines stories and characters were much more interesting and exciting.
