MURPHY
You here to sign up?
PLAYER
Sign up for what, Miss...?
MURPHY
'Miss' nothing. The name's Lynn Murphy. I go by Murphy.
PLAYER
Fine, Murphy. Look, all I want is to get down to Palan.
I'm looking for...an old friend, and I can't get through.
MURPHY
Join the club. You get to cool your heels with the rest of us on Basra awhile.
Bronte Corporation has thrown up a blockade around Palan.
Tough luck...but you could turn a nice profit, if you're smart.
There's two corporations in the Palan System, Rondell and Bronte.
Bronte is responsible for the blockade. They want to block Rondell food exports...
...while kicking up their own to fill the void, stealing Rondell's market share.
I'm organizing the resistance for Rondell from this base. Hired resistance.
PLAYER
My reasons for wanting to get down to Palan are personal.
MURPHY
Sure, but you'll never break the blockade alone. Smarten up...what's your name?
PLAYER
I am $NM, also known as $CS.
MURPHY
$CS it is. Why not sign on? The money's good.
This next mission, an intercept operation, pays 15,000 credits. Interested?
Accept Refuse
PLAYER
Hey, if I'm gonna bang up against that blockade, might as well get paid for it.
MURPHY
Good, I got a mission right now. We've traced several jumps in-system.
They're merc ships, coming to reinforce the Bronte blockade.
I want you to intercept them at Nav 1 of the Palan system...
...and prevent them from joining the main group...by any means necessary.
MURPHY
Funny, you don't look like the type to use euphemisms.
MURPHY
Just trying to spare you, ace. You look like the squeamish type to me.
MURPHY
Yeah? Guess you've never seen a real man up close. I could arrange it, if you like.
MURPHY
Sure. If one comes by, let me know.
Just stop those reinforcements, and meet me back here afterwards...
...without the cheap come-ons, got it?
MURPHY
Murphy...you're all heart.
PLAYER
I'm not looking to get involved in any corporate war.
I'll take my chances with the blockade alone.
MURPHY
Your loss, ace, I got no time to argue with you. It's your funeral.

Accepted

MURPHY
Didn't I give you a mission to fly, Mister?
PLAYER
Yeah, but I had business to tend to...
MURPHY
Stow it. This is important! If you want this blockade broken...
...and want to get paid, you better listen up!
Merc ships have jumped in-system to reinforce the Bronte blockade of Palan.
Unless you intercept them at Nav 1 of the Palan system...
...and prevent them from joining the main group, this blockade won't end any time soon.
PLAYER
Okay, okay...I'm on my way.

Rejected

MURPHY
Back again? If you're here to bust my chops some more...
PLAYER
Chill, Murphy. I'm thinking of signing on after all.
MURPHY
Yeah? Well, God knows we could use an extra hand.
Bronte has hired mercs to reinforce their blockade of Palan.
The merc ships have jumped in-system, and are set to rendevous with Bronte forces.
We'll pay you 15,000 credits to intercept them at Nav 1 of the Palan system...
...and prevent them from joining the main group...preferably by blowing them to hell.
Afterwards, return here for your pay...and another assignment.
For the last time, are you interested or not?
Accept Refuse
PLAYER
Hey, if I'm gonna bang up against that blockade, might as well get paid for it.
MURPHY
Prevent those mercs from joining the main group...by any means necessary.
PLAYER
Funny, you don't look like the type to use euphemisms.
MURPHY
Just trying to spare you, ace. You look like the squeamish type to me.
PLAYER
Yeah? Guess you've never seen a real man up close. I could arrange it, if you like.
MURPHY
Sure. If one comes by, let me know.
Just stop those reinforcements, and meet me back here afterwards...
...without the cheap come-ons, got it?
PLAYER
Murphy...you're all heart.
PLAYER
I guess I'll still take my chances with the blockade alone.
MURPHY
If you don't want my missions, then leave me alone, got it?

Failure

PLAYER
What's the matter, Murphy? You look more sour than usual.
MURPHY
You want it straight? Well here it is.
I don't think much of your flying. You're sloppy.
You fail to realize mission objectives. We can't afford to waste time with you.
You're washed up here. Collect your things and pull out.
PLAYER
But we have the same goal. I have to get down to Palan.
MURPHY
Then you'll have to do it alone. Good-bye.

E. MASTERSON - MISSION D

Summary Once again Masterson offers you an escort mission. He needs a Drayman filled with supplies to make its delivery unimpeded. This is your final mission before gaining access to the research facilities.
Payment 10,000 plus access to the Library.
Requirements Protect the Drayman and ensure its safe arrival at Oxford.
Opponents The Drayman will be waiting at Nay I, where it will be attacked by five pirate Talons (fanatical pros).
  • Well, now you're in some trouble. It seems that you get to escort another Drayman back to Oxford, but this time, it is being attacked by five Talons. You'll have to move fast and attack quickly, as usual. If you have missile launchers, start blast-ing away as soon as you get a lock The faster you destroy the Talons, the quicker you get back and gain access to the Library. - "Deetchman"

Using The Library. The Library will be accessible to you after you have completed Masterson's fourth assignment. Click on the Library to enter. Once inside, click on the cubicles, where there is a scanning research tool you can use on the artifact. Click on the scanner to activate it. After it has had a chance to gather information, you will receive a report on Dr. Lemuel Monkhouse, whose reputation is based on the discovery of Stack artifacts on Mars and other worlds. He is a major figure in the debate on the nature of this long-vanished civilization. It is rumored he possesses unconfiscated arti-facts and is currently working on Palan despite the blockade. As he is often sought after for advice on artifacts, you should seek Dr. Monkhouse on Palan.

WC:CIC Game Guide

Description

Masterson has figured out why you want access to Oxford Library, but while you are flying missions for him, he isn't bothered. And now you have another mission.

Objectives

Find the ship Vulcan's Forge at Nav 3, protect it from attack, and escort it back to Oxford.

Scripted Encounters

Bounty Hunters at Nav 3

Notes

  • The "private collectors" Masterson mentioned are attacking the Vulcan's Forge at Nav 3. There are around 6 of them, all in Demons. Even two missiles won't take out a Demon, so you'll need to weaken the shields first.

Mission :

Comments : You don't have to kill all the other pirates, you only need to shoot down Rhombus (in the Galaxy). And the cargo? What the h... do you need that for? It's almost no money.

Mission : Masterson

Comments : "What do you need the cargo for?" Hey, a guy's gotta eat. And do you know how much my leather flight jackets go for? Plus that, it's obvious you don't party like I party...booze, broads and trips to Earth don't grow on trees. On top of that, I like collecting pilot slaves. Grab the loot when you can, and leave your kids something to talk about when you kick off.
