HISTORY
The Copernicus-class is a specialized research vessel used for gathering and studying geological samples. They are unarmed save for a single Ore Laser, which is used to split open planetoids for taking geological samples. Copernicuses carry several manned "Drops", which it uses are used for gathering samples and general reconnaissance.
The most famous Copernicus-class ship was the TCS Devereaux. The Devereaux and her Drops, which had been studying asteroid Sierra-37 in the Kilrah asteroid belt, were the first targets destroyed during the Nephilim invasion of the Kilrah System. She was lost with all hands.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The below specifications are speculative. They are based on information contained within Wing Commander Prophecy's game engine that does not appear during actual gameplay. The name "ore laser" comes from the 8/23/96 Wing Commander Prophecy Beat Outline.
