Wing Commander Models

I've noted a few postings from people discussing whether any models might be produced of WC ships.

I've come across a website called Paperstarships (its a Homeworld site by the way  ). Now, I'm hopeless whe it comes to manipulating programmes, but I gather that by using something called a Win.Big viwer you can extrcat the details of the 3D model shape. Then by running a japanese graphics programme (Pepakura?), you can "peel" the surface of the model (inserting fold lines) like peeling an apple.

You can then print of the peeled surface and - by cutting, folding and glueing - build a 3d paper replica of any ship in the game.

There are a huge number of templates for models available for free download. Some, a battlecruiser springs to mind, can be up to 20inches long.

Capital ships and Fighters - especially from WC3 and WC4 are more angular (and therefore "simpler") than many Homeworld craft and so would be an easier proposition.

Has anyone tried this and what were the results. I'd do it myself if I understood how to get at the data!

The TCS Victory battlegroup from WC3 would look so cool on a shelf!

Your an officer and a gentleman. Thanks a bunch. Those three fighters are amazing and a damn siight better than all but a handful of the Homeworld downloads.

I wish I read French so I could figure out the rest of this guys site (at least I can recognize a .zip download when I see it!)

Now if only he'll do a Concordia, Victory and some cruisers. Or an In-Scale Behemoth!

I'll trawl around for any other sites and post them here if I find anything.

In the meantime check out this site:

There is a 1/144 scale UD4 dropship, components of the Hadley's Hope colony, the Marine APC and a 1:1 scale Pulse Rifle - all out of paper!

Enjoy

If you think that's cool, check this.

OK, I know its homeworld but wow!

The bad news is that I have contacted Marc, the "French Guy" who created the Piranah, Hellcat and Arrow card models and tried to follow his instructions.

I've downloaded freeware programes called Pepakura and Metaseqoia which - theory - can take 3D meshes and unfold them for printing.

After a sleepless and frustrated night - at the keyboard that is :) - I managed to import the TCS Victory and partly unfold it. The end result was unusable. Partly I think due to the Pepakura program being unable to handle so many polygons!

I'm going to try the fighters but I think I'm out of my deapth - or doing something wrong.

If all else fails I'll plead with the "French Guy" for a step by step tutorial ;)
