Wing Commander 3--DOS... joystick question

I happen to be one of those weirdos that recently built a pure MS-DOS computer, dug up a hard drive I was using for DOS back in 1997, plopped it in there along with an AWE-32, original DOS Gravis Joystick (cmon', you know what I'm talking about if you're old), have a Roland MT-32 sitting next to it etc., plus a Fresnel Lens to make old games look 3-d.

Okay, great. First game I fire up is System Shock, next is Terra Nova and 3rd is Wing Commander 3.

Only one problem. I forgot how terrible the joystick responded in WC3. So, I figure, maybe there is a way to fix this? The problem specifically is the deadzone is far too big. Is there a command to make the deadzone smaller?

I know in the Windows 95 version of WC 3 there is via -DEAD_ZONE= argument, however, it doesn't seem to work in the DOS version?

Any ideas? Someone has to remember that far back. :)
