if i might interupt the debate between WCP and WC:SO, i'd like to cast my vote.
WC4 was my fav WC game, out of the games i have played (WC3, WC4, WCP. Please dont kill me for not having played any of the Priavteer games).

Oh, good, the CZ didn't become any less stupid while I was away.

Interesting, did you expect it to improve with your absence, or was that relief? :D

You're absolutely right, Secret Ops is not Wing Commander 6.

Thanks. That would make a cool sig, too.

Wing Commander 1 and 2, by virtue of Wing Commander 1/2 CD, are the same game!

Well that is not, of course, what I was saying. As much as this debate is over, allow me to explain what I meant. It was a reference to the pattern in the numbered WC games that the gold version was the game itself and its expantions.

WC Gold = WC1 + Speech Pack + SM1 + SM2
WC2 Gold = WC2 + Speech Pack + SO1 + SO2

It was not simply fact that it came in the same box, but that the product was named "WC [something] gold" like the others.

WC2 Gold is just WC2 Deluxe in a gold box, though... and it's actually called something like Wing Commander 2 Deluxe - Electronic Arts Gold Classic Edition. It's a completely separate product than Origin's 'gold' re-releases, which included a Longbow Gold (that had both Longbowses or somesuch), Crusader Gold (with No Remorse & No Regret) and Prophecy Gold.

Well... this is good.... is said my fav. was WCP.... and i'm still alive....THANK THE LORD, IM STILL.... oh god please no, no! *BANG* *BANG*... *eriee silence*

:D

(But c'mon... please dont tell me that did atleast make you chuckle...:( )

I´ve played all WC games and I do like WCP. Your fear is pointless.

You will only get in trouble here if you don´t like any WC game and start boasting that, for instance "Freespace R0X0RZ!!!"

You know... this has been bugging me for along while... i cant seem to make out what "R0X0RZ" is? it like saying "That rocks" or something???

Hey, LOAF, glad to see you again.

But lemme ask you something:
Are you sure that WC1 and 2 share the exact same engine? Aren't they different? IRRC, only wc1 and its addons used the original engine, while WC2's was shared by privateer+RF and Academy...

One of the several differences was that the first one could only show one type of fighter for each side, while the second was a lot more flexible, as we can see in Academy...

I read something on this in an old FAQ, LAUNCH itself, maybe.

Ah, I'm not refering to the WCSO/WC6 debate here!!!! It is just a technical detail I'm trying to clear.

BTW, it think the Capship textures in WC3 look a lot better than those in WC4... is it just me?

Depends on your definition of exact -- there are differences between the engines for each game. The WC2 (and Privateer) engines are improvements of the one developed for WC1, the WC4 engine is an improvement of WC3's engine, Privateer 2 improves upon a pre-existing licensed engine (B-Render)... and Secret Ops improves upon Prophecy's Vision engine (graphically, for instance -- Secret Ops allows regular video cards to generate most of the Voodoo-only effects in WCP).

As for one type of fighter per side -- I don't think that was a restriction in WC1. Although multi-fighter battles were rare, they did occur. For instance, we engage enemy Dralthi and enemy Rapiers together at one point in SM2... and there are missions where the Tiger's Claw will be escorted by Scimitars (or somesuch) while you're flying a Hornet.

There certainly were many *changes* made -- tractor beams were added, the ability to display in-game cutscenes, and so forth. But the actual development of the game was based on the code of the previous... whereas WC3 and WCP built their engines from the ground up.

so WC4 runs on the same engine that WC3 does (i wouldnt know, i never got to play WC III, but have recently found a copy of WC4 :D)

What was similar art between SM2 and WC2 you were referring to before?

Actually, if I remember correctly, on all those cases there are only 2 different fighters types at the same time. When you take off and there are different fighter classes defending the Tiger's Claw, there are no enemies around. When you face enemy Rapiers and Dralthis, you are flying Dralthis!

The designers used clever tricks where this was hardly noticeable. But one way to kill your enemies was to use the afterburner and go to a different navpoint, what would make the enemy ships to blow up. This is one way to win the "capture the Ralari" mission on Kurosawa.

Actually I think the WC3 engine was based at least in part on the WC Armada engine. It was the first 3D engine, and the best-low res WC engine.

Also, while it was a different engine, the WCP did include improvements from WCIV, like the multiple-wing missions.
