It's possible that the disk in the VM is set to read only? Which version of windows are you using in the VM? Have you experimented with using different compatibility modes?

Even without a virtual machine stuff I've seen other people have this issue as well though but It's also possible they had to completely redownload the game as well. Either way it's not the first time I've seen this error and it might not have anything to do with the VM unless not enough disk space was allocated to the game drive.,
 
Are you out of disk space? Your virtual disk could be full. Or your real disk could be full if you're using a dynamic disk.
