Character depth

Doable yes; practical no.
There is too many unanswered questions to make a stable storyline and campaign without too many question marks.
Principal figures are missing to make it practical.

Not only that; Confed has no idea where to start

I fail to see why Confed would want to exterminate the bugs, or even to try and stop them from entering our space. We're not talking about that hole in the backyard fence through which the neighbours' dog comes in to shit in your garden

. We're talking about a meeting of two civilisations.

The main question as far as Confed is concerned ought to be, why? Why did the bugs attack us in the first place? Is it possible to establish peaceful contact?

So, _if_ Confed was to enter Nephilem space, they wouldn't be in there to exterminate things or to close gates or anything like that. It would almost have to be a research expedition, with sizeable contigents of scientists and diplomats. The possibilities for a decent storyline are endless.

If Confed sends a large exploratory contigent, it'll look like Babylon 5. A small one, however, would be like Star Trek. Only this time, the mother ship has fighter escorts. At any rate, a new WC universe had to be added and so on...

Well, the only way Confed can get into Nephilim's space is with heavy losses, because I'm pretty sure that the bugs have half their fleet over there at their side of the gate (much like Confed). While the bugs are the ones with the means of opening more gates, it's a pretty much lose-lose situation for Confed (send a fleet to the bugs, which will probably be completly destroyed, or just wait to the bugs to come again).

The way the Nephilim have been portrayed so far it doesn't seem like they are interested in negotiation. It might be possible for Confed to study the gate and figure out how to build another. I think the people of Confed are pretty war-weary, and would gladly like to keep the bugs out, if that were possible.

Just out of curiousity, since I haven't finished up SO, are their any anolomies in the area where this new gate is or is it just seemingly normal space?

The closest thing to an anomaly is that the gate is set up in a binary star system (Proxima), two jumps from Sol System. Other than that, though, there's nothing especially particular about their location.
