I enjoyed it as well. AND it definately will be a Friday ritual. Unfortunately, my girlfriend also got a bit pissed and left me watching it with friends. She's not a big sci-fi fan at all...
:(
Mine isn't either, but after the show I gave her a little history lesson about Galactica, how the show originally debuted, the miniseries, the new show, etc. It sort of put the foundation in place, and I think she genuinely appreciated my efforts at including her in something that matters to me. It kind of worked with video games too. How long will her patience last? I guess that remains to be seen.

We're getting Stargate something on local cable Fox. i think it's the first series... SG1, I think. Is it good?

My biggest complaint by far is the Docu-style camera work. I find the shakey battle scene cameras to just be distracting. It doesn't make me feel like I'm there, it makes me feel like I'm watching film taken from some amature photographer's camera.

That was actually one of the things that I really liked about the series. It added to the heck tic nature of things and really made things that much more tense.

Besides, modern Sci Fi has some pretty big problems. For every episode of Battlestar Galactica and Stargate there seems to be seventeen movies about evil versions of animals attacking. You can't get much cornier than Captain Sheridan fighting evil land-fish.
Agreed, and it bolsters one of my strongest beliefs about Sci-Fi: Most Science Fiction is (unfortunately) bad Science Fiction. That is a big reason why my hopes are high for Galactica.

We wil get SG:Atlantis and Taken in FOX, in February i think.

hum... afaik, we get the same cable schedules you get in Argentina... So it's SG:Atlantis? Is it good?
I saw the Taken advert... Is it good? eheheheh

Someone touched on a good point -- it's really, really great that we've taken Fridays back this year. It takes me back to the glory days of the early nineties, when Friday evening meant watching X-Files and whatever other show FOX didn't know how to promote properly (Brisco County/Strange Luck/S:AaB/Sliders/Mantis/etc.) with my family.

I've never gotten into Stargate, but people certainly seem to like it.

Dang I remember Mantis and ohhh man... Brisco County... dang that takes me back... back to the days of Viper and Sea Quest.

I am with ya LOAF... it's good to have some great shows to look forward to every Friday. You think you will tune in every Friday for BSG?

I'm a little bit disappointed that it didn't beat out Atlantis's 3.2 premeire... but a 2.6 is pretty awesome for the scifi channel.

Man SciFi has come a LONG way in the last 10 years. I remember when their biggest things were Buck Rogers and (the original) Battlestar Galactica. Now they're doing big budget, pretty darn decent miniserieses and original serieses left and right and getting awesome ratings.

Well... Stagate Atlantis had the good fortune of being a spinoff of a popular series and being put in the timeslot right after that series. And now it's blessed by God since it's sandwiched between two of Sci-Fi's biggest shows. I'm not a Stargate fan myself but I've heard a lot of SG-1 fans complaining about Atlantis.

The Battlestar mini-series was in the high 3's somewhere and I consider that to be the real pilot of the show anyway.

I heard that the BSG mini-series got 3.4 the first night and rose to 3.7-3.8 the second night. Because of that raise the second night, the producers actually got excited because they realized that people were talking about the series a lot and actually attracted viewers. The amount of viewers and the pretty good reviews from critics actually called for the series. AND DANG, why not make a series after the way they ended the miniseries...?

The end of the mini series was fantastic. I especially loved the scene where Adama tells everyone about Earth. That was actually supposed to be a pretty dull scene that was going to be preachy and "Everything's going to be alright" in the style of the original series but Olmos decided to play it differently and adlib a little. He ended up turning a basic scene into one of the most memorable.

Sturgeon's Law: Ninety percent of everything is crud.

(Often said as "crap", but the original quote was "crud".)

I watched the miniseries last night on DVD and I thought it was pretty good show. I do not however think it is better than the original. It may be nostalgia, but I prefer the original from 1978-9. There were a couple things that bother me about the retelling of Battlestar Galactica. The biggest is turning Starbuck into a woman and turning Boomer into a woman and a cylon.

In the original, Apollo, Starbuck, and Boomer were best friends, and would hang out together when off duty and always stuck up for each other. They were almost like the the Kirk, Spock, and McCoy trio of Battlestar. I'm not sure if there will be this same relationship now in the new series, especially with Boomer being a cylon. Whether she is an active cylon agent, or a sleeper, I'll be waiting for her to betray the colonials.

Other than that, I thought it was pretty good, except for the drum beating during the combat scense, which I thought was annoying, and the large number of make out scenes, especially between Baltar and number 6. I did think it was funny though when Cmdr Adama made the comment that people needed to start doing it, or something along those lines.

I'll keep ya posted. She was 'forced' to watch the miniseries and quote
"liked the end battle" but who knows... You are right, time will tell.

I agree that these make out scenes get very annoying. Someone mentioned that it's added for teens. I'm not convinced the teens that watch this show are watching it for its "teen porn" qualities. If they are, it's pretty sick and bad for their development, because number 6 is basically an upgraded evil version of the traditionally sick blow up doll..

Putting in a positive note: I was VERY impressed by the scene in the miniseries where the Galactica places itself in between the fleet and the Cylons as well as by the following battle. The drama is also really developing nicely. There are a multitude of questions and possibilities for the development of the story. I'll post some of my theories here, but the richness that the writers are creating have no doubt allowed for a number of different theories as to what is happening and what will happen.

Someone mentioned earlier that the Olympus was betraying the Galactica and causing the attacks. I'm not sure that this is totally the case. We can't be sure where the directors are going with this, but there are some interesting possibilities. One fact is that the Cylons probably still know where the fleet is and have possibly chosen not to attack. Number 6 knows where Baltar is and Boomer is a Cylon. Number 6 may care in some way for Baltar- this may be because the most intelligent Cylons may have been designed to be intimate companions and it's in her programming. There was a man on the Olympus who knew of Baltar's betrayal and could probably help locate many Cylon agents. The Cylons may have chosen to eliminate only this carrier because of the threat it posed to Baltar and the Cylons. A reason they may not have attacked the fleet after this is to give the humans a false sense of security. It was already stated earlier in the show that machines (as opposed to humans) have no hurry and can wait for as long as they want to acheive their goals. They may want some humans in the fleet to survive in order to fit their twisted plans from their "God" (which I think may be their head robot/computer and/or a corrupted moral code they follow). You may have other theories, but only the writers will decide which are correct..

I watched some of the mini series when it first aried, I thought it was pretty cool, but thats about the time my friend gave me a copy of Dune. Childern of Dune has to be the best mini series Sci Fi has made.
I remember watching BSG when I was younger, I loved think that Apollo was flying fighters during the night and fighting cylones (remember the last epsiodes when they were around earth) and joined up with the Ateam during the day to help people out. Man what a guy. Such was my childhood memories.

I liked the many-brained Cylons of the books. They had interesting and not cliched internal monologues and dialogues with the humans. The books where they got to earth were kinda cheesy, and they killed lot's of good characters in the transition

I thought it was cool in the opening of The A-Team when they had the Cylon walk by and Starbuck/Faceman does a double take.
