Refineries are platform-based space stations whose primary purpose is to turn natural resources into advanced fuels, durable goods, and so forth. They are a major employer of skilled labor and are found all throughout known space. They are crucial to sustaining the infrastructure of any starfaring society. During both the Terran-Kilrathi War and the Nephilim War, refineries were vital in supporting the war efforts of both sides, and as a result were often targeted by the opposing side). Like the mining bases from which they get a good amount of their supplies, refineries have a great need for food and entertainment. They also (of course) need natural resources shipped in for processing.
During the late 2660s, Gemini Sector played host to fourteen refinery bases.
