Ella is a star system in the Sol Sector and a major territory of the Terran Confederation. It is known to be a densely-populated system and hosts a number of civilian facilities, including the massive Ella Superbase.
During the Border Worlds Conflict of 2673, Union of Border Worlds forces from the BWS Intrepid were investigating illegal Confed activity in the Border Worlds. They discovered that Admiral Geoffrey Tolwyn was heading a faction known as the Black Lance to instigate a war between Confed and the Border Worlds. Desperate to stop him, they tracked down his flagship, the TCS Vesuvius, back to the Sol System. However, in order for them to succeed, they needed to avoid attracting Tolwyn's attention, so they instead detoured into the Ella System.
While in Ella, the Intrepid ran into the Ella Superbase, which was a civilian facility. It had to be decided whether it was more practical to either destroy the facility and avoid detection, or to bypass it completely. Ultimately, Colonel Christopher Blair refrained from destroying the facility and had his force bypass the station, allowing them to move onward to Talos.
