Capital ships are especially vulnerable to concentrated attacks by incoming fighters. For this reason, Turreted Laser guns were mounted to provide point-defense for particular ship surfaces. Since their introducion in 2630, most Confed and Kilrathi destroyers, cruisers, carriers, dreadnaughts, and bases were equipped with heavy, turreted lasers linked to advanced targeting systems. Only the most nimble of ships had any chance of surviving concentrated fire from these formidable weapons. The lasers were also useful for destroying incoming missles and torpedoes.

The capital-ship version of the laser could hit a fighter with twice the normal damage (two regular lasers are mounted on each turret), and the quick refire rate is more than twice that of regular lasers.

A swivel-mounted fighter version of the turreted laser was also available. Numerous fighters equipped this weapons as a defense against rear and side attacks. Although much weaker than its capital ship counterpart, it did provide high firing rates at a medium-range. The guns only real drawback was that it would drain power rather quickly.
