Wing Commander

ELTEE

Vice Admiral
Hello everyone!

I don't know a whole lot about computers, but I have managed to get Armada and Academy running perfectly with DosBox...unfortunately, I cannot get the original Wing Commander running correctly:

I have mounted everything properly following the install advice on the WC CIC, but during the install process, it keeps either looking for floppy disks or not reading the CD. I can't seem to find any alternative .exe files that recognize the fact that it should be looking for a CD.

I have run the game in DosBox right from the CD or from the hard drive (after manually copying all files over) but I obviously cant here music (as the install program wont run long enough to get to that part) and I cannot save my game either. If anyone would be so kind as to help, I would greatly appreciate it.

I am using the Wing Commander /Ultima 6 cd. At least the joystick works fine!

Did you mount the CD-ROM drive as a CD-ROM? You should be able to just copy over the Wing Commander stuff to the hard drive and install from there. Depending on what it's looking for, you might have to mount that directory as a CD-ROM or make sure the read-only attribute for the files is turned off.

Well, I tried that; i have all of the files on the hard drive by manually copying them over. Then, i start the installer program and then it asks me if i want to create a datadisk.

I say yes, and choose my hard drive C....then, it says that I am missing dos utility files, and then ends with a "installation terminated by error..."

What files does it say are missing? Are you sure you copied over everything right?

The installer reports that I am missing the following files:

APPEND.EXE
SUBST.EXE
JOIN.EXE

It says they can be located in dos utility disks, of which I obviously have none. I'm wondering if this is a flawwed cd, because I can't seem to find anyone else out there who has had a similar install problem with WC1! Should I try and obtain a different copy of the game? (haha, I tried that two years ago, and through my ignorance, bought a floppy disk version for an Amiga, not realizing what it was!!!)

THANK YOU SO MUCH...

I have just experienced the ultimate joy that I think most everyone on this site has probably experienced...that moment where, for the FIRST time since running an old computer in the early nineties, that the Wing Commander screen has loaded up successfully with music and all...what a thrilling moment!

Thank you so much Chris and LOAF....I couldn't have done it without you guys! This ends a three and a half year process of failures...what a day!

New question...I have WC1 and want to obtain the SM1 and SM2 (old dos versions, not KS.) If I purchase an old WC delux edition that comes with the SM1 and SM2, will I be able to use that version with the WC1 version I have installed on my computer now? Was the delux version any different than the add ons sold seperately?

Thanks guys!

There are minor versions, but it won't make any difference when installing the Secret Missions. It wouldn't matter either way though, since if you were buying Wing Commander 1 Deluxe, you'd also be getting a copy of WC1 specifically designed to be bundled together.

That is true.

However, I dont want to lose my character by re installing wc1, although I guess i could just copy the gamedat folder. This brings up another question actually...I recieved the "Pewter Planet" after the final mission of Wing Commander, but I dont see how you can transfer a character that has it...as soon as you finish the mission, you are sent back to the title screen and lose your data for that final mission. Is there anyway to do a game save or something right after completing that mission?

I realize this isn't the most important issue in the world, but it might be fun to try and complete all of WC1 and WCII with as many kills as possible (you also lose 16+ kills with that mission.)

Thanks for all the help guys!

If there were any differences, transplanting another version's gamedat could cause problems. You'd only need to move the save game file over. Savegame.wld in the gamedat folder. You can't save after the final mission, but if it really matters to you, you could edit the medal/kills in with the WCSAV program in our Files Section. There's another opportunity to get a Pewter Planet and save during the Secret Missions too.
