Wing Commander Sale Kicks Off at GOG (December 12, 2011)

The big holiday sale at Good Old Games is here, and the deals are simply irresistable! Almost their entire catalog is on sale at 50% off, which means most games are just $3. An often overlooked feature is all of the bonus materials included along with the software. Each title comes with bonus art, behind-the-scenes material, scanned documentation and more. This means that Wing Commander 1, 2, 3, Privateer, the Fleet Action novel and multiple Official Guides can be purchased for under $10 in total - amazing! Hit the graphics below to get your copies.

Don't forget the other Origin games either. The Crusaders are in the top ten of the Action genre and Ultima VII is currently rated as the best selling game across all genres combined! Of course, the Wing Commanders are still holding their own in the top ten of the Shooters category too.

Those are some really incredible deals for the holidays. Even if Wing Commander or Ultima is not up your alley, perhaps one of the other games for sale is.

Legal question we didn't really cover during the big debate (but let's leave that thread locked) -- Would it class as piracy to download one of these titles, and burn it on to a CD for a GIFT? My assumption is that even if I deleted the original copy after transferring, I'd still be breaching something.

I think technically yes, because the download is still in your account... you can go back and grab the game for yourself whenever you want. Certainly you could just never /use/ your download, but it still seems sketchy.

But I think the biggest problem is that it would be a pretty lousy gift! Hey, I bought myself a video game and here's a copy for you. GOG has a gift option that lets you buy a code for someone, but you probably want to give a physical object and that's understandable. Here's the solution I'm using:

- Buy a GOG gift code for the Wing Commander game(s) in question. Send the code to YOUR e-mail address -- that just e-mails the code, doesn't assosciate it with your account.
- Download your copy of the game (ie, don't use the new code, you have to own the game yourself) and put it on a CD or memory stick (I feel like the memory stick is classier and they can reuse it. I'm the Martha Stewart of old games!)
- Either save the gift code in a text file on the stick or write it on the card.

That way they can add the game to their account /and/ you'll be giving them a physical copy straight out.

Thanks, it was actually for the guy who got me into Wing Commander when I was 7, but sadly hasn't played the game since. He's been looking to find WC and WCII. The gift code is perfect.
