Wing Commander II Weirdness Around Mission 11 - Mysterious Deaths/Missing Ships

So this has to do with WC2 Mission 11.

It's a Rapier mission with Hobbes. Concordia comes under attack, I'm to protect it, rendezvous with a couple of Broadswords protecting a Clydesdale Minesweeper, then attack a small Strike Group, and finally head to a space station.

All's well and good defending the Concordia. Easy peasy.

Here's where things get weird. I get "friendly died" music, either still at the Concordia but for no apparent reason or while autopiloting (or flying manually as I did try it) to the first Nav to meet up with the Broadswords. This seems to happen every time.

Then, what I get at the Nav seems to be random. Sometimes there's 1 Broadsword only. Sometimes there's 2 Broadswords, but no Clydesdale (seems to be the most common). And sometimes both Broadswords and a Clydesdale are there as expected. (Never any enemy ships). It seems the latter is the rarest (and it might be my imagination, but it seems to occur more often if a friendly ship or two dies during the Concordia protection part).

After that, the mission plays fairly normally. But I don't know why these anomalies occur or if other people are getting 'em. (And ideally I'd like to finish the mission with all expected ships present.)

This is WC2 CD (and patched) on a DOS rig. Things have worked pretty great up until now, aside from an occasional crash.

Maybe this is a bug in the game that everyone gets?

I've had the death music play for no reason. Perhaps it was a Concordia escort fighter that bit the dust, by collision? I don't know. It never turned out to be a problem for me though.

centaurianmudpig, thanks for the comment - I have a theory, but I have no idea if it's accurate. For whatever reason in this mission, when I manually fly away from the Concordia, it seems to not want to fully disappear from screen and when I get near the Clydesdale and Broadswords, the music seems to play. I suspect you might be right that somehow the Concodia and escort are smooshed together or something, but I don't know. I think the mission is probably perfectly winnable even if the Clydesdale never shows up, but it just doesn't feel right. =oP At any rate, sounds like it's definitely something with the game in general and not my configuration then?

Played this mission several more times. Yeah. Something's weird with this mission. Another thing I noted - if you pull up the Nav map, sometimes it's...condensed. What I mean by that is, all the Nav points are really close together (maybe a centimeter or two apart). If you hit N again to select the next one though, it usually spreads out properly. I also "finished" it once and got a crash to DOS with the error A18. But the next time it worked and I'm now past it.
