Wing Commander 4 DVD and PowerDVD 5

Ok. I've read the dozen or so posts about needing a DXR2 card and the like to play the game. And I agree that its a must. Now, I've read some1 being able to play the game just by having PowerDVD 4 installed. And what I've noticed is that the game accesses the DVD and instead of a missing file message, I get this.

In case you're wondering, claud.ax is a PowerDVD audio filter. I think PowerDVD intercepted the MCI call from the game and attempted to play the video but it was borked by this little thing.

IIRC, you can get a software player to show the first part of a video segment - but it explodes when you get to a 'choice' sequence.

I actually menaged to get over the choices with some version of windvd. But then it was slomo and didn't have sound (and you had to press ESC at the end of each segment to proceed to the next if ther wasn't a choice).
