I am running Wing Commander 3 in dosbox. Works fine until I get close to an object and then the graphics get choppy. I am running an old computer P3 800, 384 ram, and a 32mb nvidia graphics card. Played with Dosbox and have not found a suitable setting

Slow computers and DOSbox is not a good combination - I know that its an old game and the original specification is miniscule by todays standards, but emulating that old hardware is expensive. If you have a faster computer, run DOSbox on that, otherwise look into running WC3 natively rather than through DOSbox.

Yeah, an 800 MHz isn't fast enough for this. Our Tech Support section has several tips for optimizing the speed, but it's going to be somewhat choppy. There are alternate emulation programs such as VDMSound, but I'm not very familiar with those. Like Andrewas said, if you can run it in regular DOS, that'd be your best bet.

Are you running this in XP? If you can somehow install win95 or 98 on the same system you should be able to run the game from there on that machine no problem. THough I think a virtual machine is out of the question for the same reason dosbox is too slow...

Partition the drive? or Dualboot?
