Wing Commander 1 KS picks up my USB Staitek ST90 Joystick, but it drifts down to the bottom right hand corner and will not move. Before anyone asks, yes I have calibrated the joystick several times at the select campaign menu, in-flight, and simulator. I have also unplugged the joystick and tried it in another usb port and updated directX. I also remember the same thing happening with my older joystick (game port) years back under windows 98. The game is running under windows2k's compatibility mode (95/98), otherwise it crashes at the select campaign menu screen. I also searched the forums, but it doesn't seem that there's been a definite solution to the problem, so I'm not holding out much hope.

Probably stupid suggestion, but is the stick also properly calibrated in Windows? Also make sure that it is the only joystick there.

Solved

I solved the problem with the in-game joystick calibration that I didn't even know was there. I only came across it in the install secret missions install.doc from the zip file here on the site. For the curious, you have to be in the barracks and hit CTRL-J to do the calibration. It's possible that this is only with secret missions installed so I'll have to do some testing.

You are probably using a USB joystick. Switch to either a serial, or get a USB-Serial adapter. I had this exact problem, and it fixed it right up. I use a Sidewinder Precision Pro with the USB adapter, and it works perfectly. Enjoy!
