Hey there,
I did a search over the forums, but 99% of the questions relating to joysticks and WC games are either centered on DOSBOX or VDMS, which is understandable, as well, thats what most people will be using now!
Okay, here we go. I have a lovely (and legit copy) of WC3, plus a nice P133 laptop with Win98SE. Now, I run WC3 THROUGH windows (dos window which just goes to full screen, you know what Im talking about), and it runs seamlessly, really. No sound hicups, no problems with video, nadda. The Inspiron 3000 turned out to be a wonderful classic gaming box as well as a portable editor
Now, my memories of Win98 are hazey. I wasn't sure if USB devices worked through a dos box or not. I know theres visualization to allow DOS programs to access devices and whatnot, but something was making me think it wasnt going to work.
In anycase, I slapped on my Sidewinder USB Gamepad just to test. Both WC3 and other games like Tie Fighter detect it just fine, calibrate, and allow me to fly around (abeit not nearly as smoothly as this is just a game pad).
I was thinking of going the expensive route and buy a PCMCIA gameport (laptop does not have one) and using my old Sidewinder Standard (gameport/analog). However, these gameport adapters look cheep on ebay, but are annoyingly expensive after shipping to canada, le sigh.
Now, if USB joysticks do work well with the vizualization, I was thinking of getting a USB gameport adapter and using my Sidewinder. This is by far the cheapest way. Would it be recomended? After all, windows would then have it added in the Game Adapters listing. Or would a pure USB joystick be reccomended (say a Sidewinder USB, basicly the standard, but USB, example:

Im really unsure about the windows 98 visualization for HID's it works with the gamepad, but it might just be a fluke.
If any of you have experiences, or reccomendations, giver a shout. Keep in mind Im aiming for a budget solution Grad school sucked my hard earned dollars haha.
Cheers
