Why games are harder to run then new, thanks MS! Privateer 1 Questions

I have some questions for anyone with knowledge. What exactly is the reason Privateer will NOT run in a windows box? I can run Academy and WC2 just fine in a windows DOS box.
I can run privateer in DOS but with some problems. I have a SB Live Value card with the emulator installed. The music works fine, but the sound FX and Speech comes out as total static. When this happends it cause the game to lock 2 seconds after. I know others have the SB Live V. card but they do not seem to experience this problem? Port 220, IRQ 7, D1.
Im running Windows 98 SE, 1 GHz, 384 MB ran, EMS emmue. on. Also is there anyway to make the graphics less choppy in DOS? (geForce GTS II chipset on vid card).

Try setting the irq to 5. To do this you must go into the computer's bios under PCI configuration change the irq5 to legacy. Now in windows go to the Device Manager and uncheck the share LPT for the Creative SB16 Emulator. It will reinstall it self and assign it self IRQ5.

How much effort?

How much effort has been put into bypassing, disabling, or editing privateer's memory manage (by knowledgeable persons)?
 
LPT sharing does cause problems when playing DOS games in Windows... the LPT sharing on my system set my printer port and SB Legacy device to IRQ 7. I moved my LPT to IRQ 4, and the SB Legacy moved itself to IRQ 5. This solved my problem.

Thank you for the information, and help. At least i can run priv in dos mode with sound, but still i'm going to attempt to re-write the manager. Its good to relive the 'dos days' again. Windows has made my code writing soft.
