Which came first? The novels or the games?

Well, the tradition of the novel has its roots in the 11th century... while the original Wing Commander came out in 1990.

Interesting question... why ask, Camper? Have you been reading the novels lately?
Nope, I was talking with my dad this morning, and he thought that the games came first, and I thought the novels came first, so I thought I'd ask some experts on the subject.

Your dad was correct.

The first WC novel, Freedom Flight, wasn't released until after WC2:SO1 (or maybe SO2, not sure which came first, but both FF and SO2 came out in 1992).

If he'd been reading the novels, he could just look at the publishing date in the front.

Not to mention that the Bible states that "in the beginning there was the Word"*, so the word is a lot older than the game.

* (I don't know how it is phrased exactly in english, but it's proabably something close to that)

Speaking of novels, shouldn't this be copyright infringement?

No, it's more complicated than that. The term "Wing Commander" is a real title that anyone can use if their subject matter uses it in context. Our Wing Commander actually wasn't even the first game called Wing Commander. There was a Commodore 64 Wing Commander made by Creative Sparks/Mastertronic in 1984 (http://homepages.tesco.net/~ralphy/c64.html )
