Website Update - December 15th, 2008

Eder

Mr. Standoff
Here's our latest website update, with accompanying screenshots!

Well, the previous update was a few days early - and this one is a few days late, so everything balances out :).

There's been more than a bit of progress these past two weeks - good, solid progress on every aspect of the project. First up, if you look on the progress page, you'll see that "additional graphics" has at long last gone blue. So, blue is now the dominant color for episode 5. Progress is also very good for in-flight voiceovers, and I've changed them to green. I actually had some doubts about that - although Tempest has processed quite a lot of voiceovers recently, we still only have a little more than half of them ready to use in-game. Still there's very little left to record, so green it is.

Missions have also made solid progress, though not sufficient to affect their status on the progress page. Pedro delivered his mission as planned and is working on another. Quarto expects to get at least one more mission done before Christmas. And Pierre, though as busy as ever, is reporting progress on his missions too.

Finally, cutscenes and music. I'm still finishing up on the last five cutscenes, but I expect cutscenes to go blue in the near future. Music is a little further behind, but Michael reports he will complete the intro music this week. In every episode, the intro is always the most time-consuming (...though something tells me the outro might be even more time-consuming this time round :) ), so this is definitely good news.

Speaking of cutscenes, we've added more new screenshots on the screenshots page. The first of these is taken from a mission (I never quite realised how big that Starbase is compared to other capships :) ), but the others are from cutscenes. As you can see from the subtitles, things are definitely not looking up this episode...

By the way, since Episode 5 is going to be the end of Standoff, our testers are now also testing previous episodes in search of bugs that still need to be fixed for the final release. So if you have encountered anything odd while playing Standoff, please report it at the forum.

Wow, a briefing room, great addition. That's sure to add more of the Wing Commander feel to the game! My computer is fixed now and it's up and running again, so disregard the comments from about a month ago about taking your time and hurry up and get it done!

You have no idea what you are in for :D

Now I have to go back to testing or Quarto is going to hunt me down with proton torpedoes with 0 lock time :D

Well... not exactly. It's gonna see inaction. This is one of the carriers that did not take part in the battle, because they were not under power.

It's great to see that all of you are still putting so much entuthiasm in this project.

Can't wait to play the whole game from start to end when its finished :)

Many thanks for your great work on this project!

Thank you so much for your valiant effort to bring good solid gaming back to its roots. As an older gamer, I remember 18 years ago trying to play WC1 on an Amstrad PC 1640 with twin 5-1/4 drives. You would need to swap 7 disks to play a mission... and it was S.L.O.W. Now, with all the gadgets and wizardry we have, it is absolutely fantastic that this game is still being treated with the respect it deserves.

It is my hope that this game will show a younger generation just why we ol' timers still enjoy Wing Commander so much. Who knows? They may even get a joystick so that they can enjoy WC:Standoff as it was meant to be played.. :D

Pffft, everyone knows WC was meant to be played with a mouse :p.

Heh, real wingnuts played WC with extremely overpriced joystick sets. If you didn't spend $300+ on your set you just weren't trying :p

Maybe. I can't even remember what kinds of joysticks were on the market when WC1 arrived. Thrustmasters and Sidewinders were all the rage by the time WC3 hit - but in 1990, all I can remember were those crappy little square box things sporting the crappy little sticks that were smaller than your pinky.

Horribly, I have to admit that the game finally that forced me to buy a joystick was X-Wing. Mostly because keyboard flight responsivity for that franchise was so godawful that I had no other choice.

The great thing about Wing Commander is that it has several awesome flight schemes. You didn't need a joystick or whatever to get by.

As a keyboard user, I am fairly certain that X-Wing didn't have any keyboard controls. I struggled very poorly using the mouse when I had borrowed it from a friend.

I've got $75 worth of Best Buy cards. Even though it's more expensive I'd rather not spend real money if I don't have to.

I'll probably end up going into the local Best Buy to see if they have any other models besides those three. I'd like to get the wireless one, but Bestbuy.com doesn't seem to stock it.

Does it come with programming software or do you need to d/l one of the programs people were discussing in that other thread?
