Wcview not working - alternatives?

I have been unable to get wcview.exe to work. Tried running it through command prompt as well as dosbox, tried compability modes too... but it remains unable to find the files... Anyone had any luck running it under XP?

As an alternative, I wouldn't mind some manual hex-editing; does anyone know which parts in WC1.exe (Dos or kilsaga), SM1.exe and/or SM2.exe (kilsaga only) are the ships' data?

as i recall, neither of the exe files contains the data! its all in ships.dat or something in gamedat - will have a look later on

i stand corrected - i was thinking of the image file viewer!

well ive just tried to run wcview and it says it couldnt find the exe file - possibly is something to do with xp NTFS file system but i cant see that it would have such a big effect!

nope can't get it working with dos wc1 either :(

If it's the filesystem, well, I've tried it on both NTFS and FAT-32 partitions. Anyone got a FAT-16 partition lying around? :)

Ahh - I don't think WCView ever worked with the original Wing Commander... I couldn't get it to work when it was new. It *should* work with the DOS SM2.exe, though.

the manual seems to imply that it would - will give it a bash when i get home though, if it does turn out to be a file system issue then it could be harder to rectify (although arent most memory sticks fat?)

Yeah, the readme says it does -- but as far as I know it never actually has.

(Wasn't there some trick to get it to read the original executable correctly? Try renaming wc.exe sm2.exe and see if that does it.)

loaf wins again! - it does indeed work with SM2.exe but not with wc.exe and no, you can't simply rename wc.exe to sm2.exe as it still won't work :(
