I recently was given a copy of Privateer 2 as a gift and I can't get it to work on windows 98 or ME. will it work on XP?

What error do you get? Is it the DOS or the Windows version.
In any case XP tends to make matters worse...

the error required that it beable to run in a full dos mode. so i tried to boot it up on a windows 98 system in full dos mode and through a dos window and got nowhere.

You can get a patch to make the DOS version of Privateer run under Windows here:

Works great for me under Win98se, not sure about other versions, though. Hope that helps.

Alternatively create yourself a new icon that just opens a DOS window. Right click on the icon, go to advanced properies and pick "Do not detect windows" or somesuch there. Now you can install P2 from there and also start it in that window.
