I bought Wing Commander IV off of GOG.com on Tuesday, but I haven't been able to get it to run, and I've tried a great deal. I've made sure all my software is up to date, I've run compatibility mode, I've deactivated my firewall and antivirus software, I've uninstalled and re-installed my codec, re-downloaded the game itself, and installed recommended files.

When I launch the game, the screen goes dark for about a second, and I get an error message that says, "Crash detected, we are sorry for the inconvenience. Please see the contents of the wc_debug.txt file." I have included both the contents of that file and my system specs.

Thank you very much for your time.

Hi there. Not sure what to think about your crash dump. It does give me a few hints, so here are a few things I'd have you try out:
  • The crash dump seems to point to MSCTF.DLL. Microsoft have acknowledged a bug in that file and suggest you disable the advanced text services. See the knowledge base.
  • Are you sure you are using the lastest video drivers ? Your file here says 6.14.0012.9610, but I think we're up to 8.something now. Check this out.
  • Are you using a admin-privileged or limited user?

Hey,

I'm travelling at the moment, so i don't have access to my PC or my notes on WC4 to check a few things. However, i'd say this problem is likely an OpenGL initialization issue. You could try the following:

- As Pete suggested, update your video drivers.
- Go to your NVidia control panel, Manage 3D Settings, Program Settings and set Threaded Optimiztion to OFF. This option is sometimes problematic.

Let us know if these help!
(I'll look into this in more detail when i get home.)
Mario

Thanks for helping, guys. I installed the hotfix from that knowledge base, tried disabling advanced text services, updated my video driver and made the suggested modification in the nVidia Control Panel. No change yet, and I actually have to keep advanced text services on as I'm studying East Aisan languages, but I really appreciate it.

Hey,

I freshly installed XP Home on a spare laptop I have around, a Toshiba M50. Since your log indicates a crash related to Advanced Text Services, i added support for East Asian Languages and played with IME a bit. All worked well, the game ran fine.

Then i noticed a reference to ThreatFire on your log. After installing ThreatFire, i can report that the game no longer runs (although it is not exactly the same situation as yours, since a crash log was not generated). I guess it may not agree with some of the tricks being used in our patch. Try disabling / uninstalling ThreatFire or any other anti-virus software you have installed and let us know if it helped!

Thank you!

I never thought that I might have to uninstall my firewall entirely. I got another firewall program and everything is running smoothly. I appreciate this immensely.
